Qatar National Sports Day is a yearly opportunity to reevaluate our exercise and physical health for all members of society of different age groups and genders, in the current environment, where schedules are ever full and where movement has become something of an anomaly.

Qatar National Sports Day is not about practicing sports for a single day, it is an awareness campaign that encourages people to exercise, educates them on improving their health and motivates the community to continue with better lifestyles.

Qatar University greatly values sports, which is a key factor in the University’s strategic plan. The University strives to show an integrated approach to the health of the human being, from mental health to physical health. Through academic programs, fields of study or the variety of sports activities, in individual or social settings, as well as the annual sports day, the University offers year-round choices for sports participation.

Qatar University offers three open sports complexes, that allow visitors to get fresh air while incurring daily exercise. In addition, the university boasts a female indoor gym, male gym and an aquatic center. In addition, the facilities host various sports including football, volleyball, handball, basketball, tennis, swimming, snorkeling and squash. The Qatar University Sports and Events Complex, which will open soon, includes a number of stadiums, fitness halls, classrooms and trainings for students of the sports activities department. When it officially opens, the complex will host the annual graduation ceremonies of Qatar University, with a total area of 27,600 meters.

On the occasion of this year’s sports day, Asmaa Al-Naemi, Manager of Sports & Recreation Activities, says “Before the clear athletic angle, sports day is a sociocultural event where we have, over the years, been able to raise awareness of the importance of sport in society. It is an excellent phenomenon, whose positive effects will be reflected in the future through members of our society. This reinforces the human development aspect of Qatar National Vision 2030.”

Al-Naemi stressed the University’s keenness to help in the practice of sports, saying “Since its inception, Qatar University has been focused on all things related to sports and sports tournaments, aiming to inject creativity into its sports department. During the past few years, the University has distinguished itself in its various participations, both locally and internationally. University students have gained a number of valuable awards through different competitions.”

She adds, that the University administration greatly encourages participation in important sporting events as they also bring about opportunities for culture exchange and a platform for healthy competition. Opportunities such as these highlight the university as well as our beloved country Qatar.
