Law Students to Brief on Draft Domestic Violence Law
2012-05-27
The students from the College of Law (LAWC) Domestic Violence Clinic will  hold a press conference  on May 28 to discuss the domestic violence law they drafted as part of a capstone project to engage the issue in line with its reference in the Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS) 2011-2016.  The students will also issue a call for comprehensive awareness programs to combat family violence in Qatar.

This press event is one of the ways in which the Clinic’s twenty-six students are bringing public attention to the issue in Qatar.  It is also an opportunity for them to gain experience in presenting before the media, fielding questions, and articulating the issue to an audience.

The students recently completed the Clinic’s first semester in which they learned about the damaging effects of domestic violence on individuals, families and society at large, and examined the current laws, services and resources available in Qatar for victims.  They also reviewed international human rights instruments and the domestic violence laws of other countries.

In the process of learning about domestic violence, the students gained practical lawyering skills such as oral advocacy, critical thinking, legislative drafting and legal research and writing which will be of considerable value to them in their professional lives.

In March, the students held the first-ever Domestic Violence Awareness Week in which they gave presentations to an audience of QU and community members to educate them on the psychological, social, economic, and legal aspects of domestic violence.

LAWC Dean Dr Hassan Okour said, “We are very proud of these students’ demonstrated commitment to eradicating domestic violence and their careful study of this important social issue”.  He noted that the Domestic Violence Clinic is the first law school clinical program in the entire Gulf region, saying: “It reflects the College’s commitment to teaching students practical skills that prepare them for law practice, and our desire to educate civic-minded lawyers who will contribute to the improvement of Qatar society”.

The press conference will be held at the College of Law Women’s Section, Rm C-219, and will be followed by a reception and awards ceremony.
