Winners announced in innovation and entrepreneurship contest

Winners of the innovation and entrepreneurship contest were announced at the closing ceremony on December 28.

The contest which was sponsored by Vodafone Qatar included students from the College of Engineering (CENG – 70%), College of Business and Economics (CBE – 20%) and other colleges (10%). It covered 5 tracks -- Health Sciences, ICT and Technology-Based Projects, Energy and Environment, Social Enterprises, and Business Services.

The contest was designed to trigger the entrepreneurial skills of QU’s students, spread awareness about the importance of entrepreneurial activities, and highlight how to develop sound business plans.

First-place winners were Kariem A. Fahmi and Abdelrazek Ibrahim (CENG)– Technology;Hend Abdulla Jamali and Wafa Ahmad Aljaal (CENG) – Business Services;while College of Arts and Sciences students Sana Iftikhar Khan, Sameera Shanawaz Shaikh, and Sarah Malikwon in the Energy and Environment track.

Ali Al Zubairi, Husam Abdalwahab Rohy, Abdul Quddoos Abdul Basith, and Mohammed Atallah (CBE) placed second in the Technology track.

Participating teams were required to prepare and present their pitches outlining the essence of their business ideas to a panel of judges. 102 students participated in the contest which drew 50 business ideas -- Technology 60%, Business Services 22%, Social Enterprises 8%, Health Sciences 8%, and Energy and Environment 2%.

CENG Dean Dr Rashid Alammarri said: “The College of Engineering is committed to providing its students with a forum to develop skills and competencies in becoming the next leaders and drivers of change in the world of business. Having the benefit of training opportunities with Vodafone Qatar in this contest boosted students’ enthusiasm to develop creative and innovative business ideas which will add value to their engineering education.”

CBE Dean Dr Nitham Hindi said: “This contest gave CBE students an invaluable opportunity to learn from experts from Vodafone Qatar in very specialised areas of business. We are delighted to have the company’s support in our efforts to advance our students’ knowledge and experience towards their future success as entrepreneurs.”

Vodafone Qatar played an active part in the training sessions leading up to the final presentations and joined the judging panel.CEO Kyle Whitehill said: “Vodafone Qatar is proud to have sponsored Qatar University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest and we are very excited to have met and guided Qatar’s future entrepreneurs. Our partnership with Qatar University is one component of our continued efforts to develop a capable and motivated workforce in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”
