Scholarship Program launches new year

Current and returned scholars were celebrated at the Fourth Annual Scholarship & Sponsorship Students Gathering ceremony held on January 4 at Grand Hyatt Hotel.

The event program also included the announcement by the Scholarships and Partnerships Office of twenty distinguished national QU graduates selected in this academic year to pursue Master’s and PhD studies abroad. Additionally,13 Masters and six PhD scholars -- were presented with awards in recognition of their commitment and academic achievements.

The event was also an opportunity for scholars to provide prospective scholarship holders with an insight into postgraduate education and the benefits and challenges of studying and living abroad.

QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, members of QU leadership, deans and heads of departments were joined by ambassadors H.E Dana Shell Smith (USA), H.E Nicholas Hopton (UK), and H.E. Ewa Polano (Sweden), H.E. Yvette Burghgraef-van Eechoud (The Netherlands), and British Council director Mr Martin Hope.

Currently 62 students are on scholarship at top-tier universities around the world such as the Imperial College London, Karolinska Institute, Columbia University, University College London and Johns Hopkins University.

In her remarks, Prof Al-Misnad said: “The fast developing scholarship program at QU has been a sustainable resource of national faculty members and future leaders. We have been thrilled to watch students from the program get admitted into some of the best universities in the world, graduate successfully, and proceed to achieve remarkable heights of career success serving QU as leaders or moving onward to serve Qatar in many other ways.”

She told the students: “You are an asset to Qatar University and to your country. We are happy and privileged to welcome you on campus today and hope that these annual visits will further strengthen your connection with your alma mater.”

Returned scholar and currently acting head of Biological and Environmental Sciences department in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) Dr Fatima Ammar Al-Naemi was recognized for her active participation in QU life the workforce after graduation and for participating actively in the university life. She said: “We are pleased to participate in this event that aims to encourage students and recognize their academic achievements. Education plays a core role in the society as it is the result of long-term sacrifices and efforts over the years. It also adds value to human life, and contributes to help graduates reach high positions in the workforce, and become the future leaders of their country.”

College of Law (LAWC) dean Dr Mohamed Al-Khulaifi, himself a returned scholar, said: “Being on scholarship program is a very important and challenging stage in a student’s academic life. Students must have a clear purpose, a strong vision and careful planning in order to achieve success and reach their goals. While studying abroad, they must also be highly determined, patient, and persevering in their efforts to succeed. After graduation, they must have in mind the will to compete in order to reach high positions in the labor market and become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Master’s scholar Aisha Al-Rashdi and PhD scholars Maha Abdulla H I Al-Asmakh, Nayef Al-Yafei and Noor Al-Maadeed also shared advice and experiences on the advantages of studying in a high-level degree program, living in a new culture, and building friendships with people from around the world.

Aisha Al-Rashdi said: “This event is an opportunity to students, upcoming scholars, and intellectuals to get the chance to share QU scholars’ experiences, and join them in this moment of reward and celebration for their achievements. It also highlights the scholars’ thirst towards understanding various fields of knowledge and the responsibilities that accompany it.”

Maha Abdulla H I Al-Asmakh said: “This event is a great opportunity to meet with our colleagues and share our experiences, which allows us enrich our abilities and skills in order to join the workforce. Life is full with experiences, and the more we get involved in new experiences, the more our life gets better.”

Nayef Al-Yafei said: “We hope to bring what we learnt abroad here and participate as active professionals and leaders in the labor market, which enables us contribute to our country’s development.”

Noor Al-Maadeed said: “I am happy to participate in this timely event as it gives us the chance to meet and gather with our colleagues as well as the faculty members at Qatar University. This event encourages us to continue learning and developing our abilities, in order to become tomorrow’s leaders and contribute to our country’s growth.”
