2015-01-29

CAS recently partnered with American Council of Education (ACE) to deliver a workshop aimed at establishing a clear professional development system and a greater operational efficiency for faculty administrators within QU.

The 2-day Leadership Workshop for Department Heads and Emerging Leaders drew over 37 participants which included a number of current and future leaders at CAS as well as from other QU colleges.

Opening remarks were made by QU VP and Chief Academic Officer Dr Mazen Hasna, CAS dean Dr Eiman Mustafawi, and President Emeritus and Regent Professor, University of Wisconsin (UW) System and ACE Presidential Advisor for Leadership Dr Kevin P Reilly.

Dr Mustafawi said: “We are pleased to partner with ACE on this effort that aims to enhance and promote leadership education and training, and build interdisciplinary collaboration within QU and with institutions at home and abroad. It is in line with our 5-year development plan in which we will continue to spearhead leadership development on a university-wide basis and to contribute to advancing leadership best practice, faculty motivation, and student success.”

Participants were oriented on a range of leadership responsibilities, principles and administrative functions such as how to motivate excellence in teaching, research, and service, and manage student and faculty complaints. This also included best practice in managing conflict and change and the various strategies that are commonly utilized in navigating the challenges of leadership positions.

Sessions also focused on the role of department heads in working beyond their academic units in service to institutional goals, mission and vision, as well as best practice in developing and implementing a strategic plan and vision at the college level. Focus was also given to how heads can motivate and encourage their faculty’s support of institutional development and progress, and particularly how a motivated faculty body plays a critical role in student success.

CAS Associate Dean for Planning and Quality Assurance Dr Steven Wright said: “This workshop wasaimed to invest in people and to promote greater operational effectiveness and overall quality. It was an enriching experience and we are very pleased with the positive feedback.”
