Students’ excellence take center stage

QU students have continued to demonstrate their excellence as they rack up impressive wins in the academic and research fields, as well as in the sporting arena. This term has seen a number of student achievements that are a testament to QU’s mission and vision and that live up to the spirit of Qatar National Vision.

These include the SEC Excellence Award for PhD holders bestowed on Dr Abdulla Khalid A M Al-Ali and Dr Noor Ali S A Al-Maadeed from College of Engineering (CENG) and Dr Mariam Al-Mulla, College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). This prestigious award recognizes academic excellence and encourages individuals to employ more efforts in quality output in the academic, scientific and research fields and contribute to national ambitions towards a knowledge-based society in Qatar.

Students also achieved a number of wins in regional and international conferences, demonstrating their research talent and capability among their peers from universities around the world. It also pointed to their commitment to seeking solutions to issues that impact on Qatari society.

College of Pharmacy (CPH) students’ 1st and 2nd place wins in the student poster competition in the recent 5th Annual Pharmaceutical Care Conference in Oman highlighted research on cancer and the role of the clinical pharmacist; and measuring the effectiveness of a research training program through base line and post-activity testing.

The team comprising Aya Al-Shammaa, Heba Al-Taweel and Noran Zahran presented their winning research on “Population Pharmacokinetics of Methotrexate Using Retrospective TDM Data in Cancer Patients: Role of Clinical Pharmacist”, while Soumaya Allouch, Hanen Alrowashdeh and Tesnime Jebara’s 2nd place poster addressed “Effectiveness of a Research Training Program on Improving Health-related Research Capacity of Pharmacists at Two Specialized Tertiary Care Hospitals in Qatar” .

At the scientific forum for female students from universities and higher Education Institutions in the GCC, BA Social Work student Mayasah Al Ma’mari (CAS) won first place for her poster “Marital compatibility amid social changes in Qatari society”, engaging research on a subject of critical importance within the society.

In the sporting arena, QU students showed their footballing prowess, emerging champions in the recent universities football league cup tournament in their 2-1 win against Qatar Aeronautical College in the final match. 12 academic institutions in Qatar competed in the tournament. In addition to winning the gold medal and trophy, the team also won awards for Fair Play, Best Goalie and Best Player. It is the second consecutive year for the QU team winning the tournament.
