Department Achievements for the 2014-15 Academic Year
The Department of Social Sciences has made countless achievements during this academic season (2013-2014) including the following major highlights:
- A total of eleven seminars have been presented by the Department of Social Sciences and its three programs since October 2014 to April 2015.
- The Social Work Field Practicum Program has increased partnerships with social services agencies and schools from 11 last year to 27 this year.
- Dr. Hmoud Oleimat published a book in 2014 on the topic of Scientific Research Report.
- Dr. Kaltham Al Kuwari published a book in February 2015.
- The Department of Social Sciences External Affairs Committee has conducted two workshops (with a Qatar Independent School and a Private International School). This Committee has also established a working partnership between the Department of Social Affairs and Department of Social Sciences.
- On March 3, 2015, the Social Work Program hosted “Student Orientation” for newly registered students registered in the Social Work Program.
- On March 10 and 11, 2015, the Department of Social Sciences hosted the Fifth International Social Sciences Conferences: Understanding the Rise of Radicalization.
- On March 22nd and 23rd, 2015, the Department of Social Sciences participated in an “Open House” orientation for high school students (for male students on March 22nd and for female students on March 23rd).
- On April 16-18, 2015, selected students and faculty from the department of Social Sciences attended the National Undergraduate Research Conference in Washington, D.C.
- April 21, 2015, students from the Social Work Program organized a conference at the University highlighting services offered by different social services agencies and schools who are presently involved with the Field Practicum Program at Qatar University.
Summary of the Activities and accomplishments of the department during the Academic year 2013-2014
The Department of Social Sciences has made countless achievements during this academic season (2013-2014) including the following major highlights:
- Signing an MOU with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to conduct a Research Project on Juvenile Delinquency in the State of Qatar. The value of the research fund is 639,100 QAR.
- The Department research output for this year counts 31 research projects conducted by faculty of the department some of which are already published and some are under review or in progress.
- The Department of Social Sciences staged 7 academic and intellectual events this year including the very successful and well-attended event of Dr. Azmi Bishara’s elocution.
- A total of 14 students got accepted to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, University of Kentucky (U.S.A.). 7 students participated with an oral presentation or a poster presentation of their research findings.
- 3 students from the social work program presented at a regional conference in Kuwait.
- A total of 7 students presented at the Research Day and competed for the Research Day Award on May 29th 2014.
- Production and presentation of 13 good quality Capstone Research projects which will be produced in a student research publication and published also online in the department website.
- The social work program produced a comprehensive Academic Program Review for the Social Work Program which was submitted for external review.
- The Department hired 18 new faculty; 6 in Social Work, 6 in Sociology, 3 in Psychology, and 3 as Teaching Assistants.
- The Department has provided ample expertise to the community through faculty consultation and community service and outreach activities.
- A score of faculty of the department have received awards for their outreach contributions or research impact.
- The department has elected this Spring 1 student representative for each program to act as a liaison between students of the respective program and the department.
- The Department is laying the groundwork for a Psychology and Social Work Laboratory which should serve as an important faculty and student-research infrastructure.
