Welcome to Gulf Studies Center

I am pleased to welcome you to Gulf Studies at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) that is committed to advancing cutting edge research and interdisciplinary and innovative scholarship on the Gulf and the wider region.

Gulf Studies at CAS encompasses the Gulf Studies Research Center and the Gulf Studies Program, which offers two graduate degrees: Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctorate (PhD) in Gulf Studies. These two taught graduate programs are integrally linked to the Gulf Studies Research Center which aims to provide research-led teaching and conducts research in three concentration areas: energy and economics, politics and security and social issues.

I am delighted to see so much interest in these unique and exciting programs, the world's first to focus exclusively on the Gulf within the region itself. Developed in 2011, the Gulf Studies Program, initially offering MA in Gulf Studies, continues to grow and advance teaching and scholarship in the Gulf Studies field. The Gulf Studies Research Center was established in the fall of 2013 and is committed to advancing cutting edge research and scholarship on the Gulf region. The Center also hosts a number of conferences and research events with regional and international partners. The PhD Program in Gulf Studies, launched in 2015, will admit students in September 2015.

These graduate programs aim to provide our students with an in-depth and interdisciplinary understanding of issues related to the contemporary states of the Gulf. Students have the unprecedented opportunity to engage with leading academics and practitioners in the field through classes and coursework, conferences, special seminars, guest lectures, research and extracurricular activities.

The diverse and ambitious student body, with students from a variety of nationalities and academic and professional backgrounds, fosters a collaborative and open learning environment that provides them the space to discuss and debate different perspectives and topics. The Program positions students to contribute to one of the world's most rapidly developing regions, while also instilling a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
