The curriculum of the Biomedical Sciences program was formulated in collaboration with the leading healthcare agencies in Qatar to provide a qualified workforce for the diagnostic laboratories and to provide students with a professional and rewarding career in the hospital laboratories or for further postgraduate studies.

In 1980, the Ministry of Public Heath expressed interest in working with the University in the area of Biomedical Sciences. A joint committee from Hamad Medical Corporation and the Faculty of Science at Qatar University drafted a program that led to a B.S. degree in Biomedical Sciences. In view of the University's interests in developing new programs in applied science to meet the needs of the community, a comprehensive plan was proposed and approved by the University Council in 1984. As a result, the Biomedical Sciences Program started in the fall of 1984. The Program has been periodically reviewed and modified to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the medical community. It was reevaluated by the Faculty and Hamad Medical Corporation in 1990. In 1998, the program was revised with input from Hamad Medical Corporation, Program graduates, the Institute of Biomedical Science in the U.K., and the Head of the University Center for Biomedical Science. Program changes were approved in 1999.

On April 30, 2008, the Health Sciences Department of Qatar University's College of Arts and Sciences celebrated receiving an official 5-year initial accreditation award for its Biomedical Sciences Program from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). This is the first Biomedical Sciences Program to be accredited by NAACLS outside the United States.

In addition to the structured curriculum, the Program emphasizes independent learning and development of professional skills through seminars, clinical experiences, and a capstone research project applying acquired knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of Biomedical Science.
