Community Service
Community service at the Center for Community Service and Continuing Education aims to find ways to cooperate with government and private non-profit agencies, to seek the distinguished competencies and experiences of faculty members in academic departments inside Qatar University, to seek help from distinguished individuals in the fields of community service inside and outside the State of Qatar, and to adapt these experiences and transfer them to individuals in the society.
The scope of community service work includes the following:
- Strengthening Qatar University's relationship with the community through communication with various social strata.
- Finding and creating opportunities for participation through academic curricula, and communicating with schools and social institutions.
- Cooperating with the relevant authorities in developing training and education programs for students and workers in schools and centers specialized in caring for special groups.
- Providing training courses and workshops in the field of basic general skills for the public.
- Designing and providing programs for people with special needs.
During the year 2019-2020, several courses were offered in the field of community service targeting individuals with special needs, their families and the groups working with them.
Community service and Continuing Education Center in collaboration with Motif Consulting organized several courses, including the International License as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) course, which aimed to empower the specialists in this field. This course also provided knowledge and prepared parents, teachers and workers to follow and exercise duties and responsibilities according to internationally recognized scientific principles for individuals with special needs.
In addition, program for developing functional communication skills for people with autism was offered. Participants learnt how to deal and communicate with individuals who have autism and develop a plan to support them to achieve their independence. Job skills programs were offered, to train parents, teachers and workers associating with special need individuals to acquire basic skills. Participants were also educated with the basics of motor, sensory, and cognitive skills.
Community Service and Continuing Education center has also signed a contract with the Mental Health Association to launch a program for psychosocial and clinical counseling skills. This program aims to train psychosocial and clinical counselors to follow a unified scientific methodology based on the latest educational and psychological strategies within the counseling institutions.
