Research Excellence Award

The Research Excellence Award was established to publicly recognize, encourage and promote the sustained research of Qatar University (QU) faculty members and researchers that has significant impact on society, industry, and related disciplines, meeting the vision and mission of the University.

The Research Excellence Award is announced for faculty members and researchers in the following three categories:

Category 1: Sciences & Engineering including, but not restricted to, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, marine sciences, environmental sciences, human nutrition, physics, mathematics, statistics and all branches of engineering.

Category 2: Humanities & Social Sciences including, but not restricted to, law, education, business and economics, Arabic language and literature, English, history, international affairs, mass communication, policy planning and development, psychology, sociology and social work.

Category 3: Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences including, but not restricted to, medicine, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, sport sciences, public health and health sciences.

The awards will be presented at the Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition 2019 on 23 & 24 April 2019.


Nominations are solicited from faculty members and researchers who have been employed full time at the university at least since September 1, 2014.

Individuals who have received university level research excellence award during the past 5 years (August 2013 – August 2018) will not be deemed eligible for this award.


The award will be granted to faculty members and researchers whose research contributions is recognized as having significant impact on the related field, during the past 4 years, i.e. since January 2014– to present.

The research will be evaluated through a range of parameters including: 

  • Publication credentials as assessed through articles in international peer reviewed journals of high impact as a lead or senior author (submitted manuscripts or those under review and conference proceedings or abstracts will not be considered as credential publications).
  • Books/monographs, books’ chapters as the lead author
  • Innovative research products, for industry, community or society, including patents
  • Contribution to undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral training
  • Extramural funding obtained as key principal investigator and collaborator
  • Outreach to the community or industry with useable product(s)
  • Demonstrate leading role in building research partnerships promoting University profile on regional and world level
  • Leadership positions in international societies of repute including editorial board membership (memberships of societies will not be considered)
  • Layman/public articles, talks, TV appearances, radio talks, that render publicity to QU and bring visibility to QU research
  • Senior/lead authorship must be verified by the college/unit administration
  • Any publications in predator/paid journals will be disregarded and must be discredited by the college/unit
  • Other activities that merit consideration as major contributions towards research excellence 

Nomination Process

To be considered for the award, individual faculty members and researchers must submit the following:

  1. Endorsement letter from the direct manager (e.g. HOD, Associate Dean for Research, Dean/ Director) supporting the application and certifying the authenticity of the submitted documents. The letter must highlight (in bullet-points) specific reason why the applicant is deserving of the award.
  2. A cover letter from the applicant (PDF document duly undersigned by the applicant, not exceeding 3 pages, single space, 1” margin, Font 12, New Times Roman or Arial, single space without compaction) addressed to the VPRGS, Qatar University, clearly listing salient research achievements since January 2014, along with a summary paragraph justifying their candidature for the award. At the top, the cover letter must state the category in which the faculty member or researcher wants to be considered for the award, i.e., Sciences and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences or Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences.
  3. A PDF copy of updated CV with relevant information; salient achievement of the past 4 years must be highlighted in the C.V. 
  4. PDF copies of 3 salient achievements, which highlight key research accomplishments of the candidate.

The nomination package along with attachments must be sent electronically (no hard copies accepted) to: at noon of Wednesday 20th Feb 2019.
