CORE CURRICULUM PROGRAM
Dr. Rana Sobh
Director, Core Curriculum Program
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Core Curriculum Program (CCP) website.
The CCP oversees the courses that all QU students must take beyond their majors, as part of their degree requirements. The CCP has seven packages and a thoughtful selection of courses within each package that students can choose from according to their interest. Taking courses from outside their majors is crucial for students’ intellectual and personal growth; it helps them become rounded and gain a broad perspective on life. For instance, an engineering student should be exposed to the field of humanities and social sciences to have a better understanding of oneself and society. For the same reason, a student majoring in history should have the opportunity to take science courses to understand the scientific laws that govern the universe.
In addition, the program strives to instill students with a common set of skills and competencies needed for academic and professional excellence in a diverse and dynamic context. These include communication skills, ethics, social responsibility, information literacy, leadership and entrepreneurial mindsets. Our ultimate goal is to prepare students to become agents of change and lead the socio-economic development in Qatar and the region.
One of the first courses students would take in the CCP is UNIV100 Seminar. This course is offered to first-year students to acculturate them to the academic, social and emotional demands of university studies. This course is designed to ensure retention and successful degree completion.
We are working on enhancing the CCP to support Qatar University vision to transformation and better reflect our ideals and aspirations as a national university. As I always encourage my students to be creative, innovative and never settle on less than their best, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to take part in improving our program for yourself, your classmates and future students. If you have any ideas to develop the CCP at any time, please do not hesitate in communicating your thoughts to CCPDirector@qu.edu.qa
