Three QU students won first prize in the 2nd Undergraduate Research Experience (UREP) competition under Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), it was announced this week.
College of Engineering (CENG) students Asma Al-Emadi, Nassma Mohandes, Mona Al-Ansari and Aisha Al-Abdulla won for best project and best presentation for the development of a prototype of a traffic surveillance system. The students were supervised by Head of Computer Science and Engineering Department Prof Qutaibah Malluhi.

The winning project entitled “DTS: A System For Real-Time Doha Traffic Surveillance Using Zigbee” was one of six to be selected as finalists in the competition.
The projects were evaluated by independent external reviewers based on quality of work (25%), relevance of the data to the conclusion (25%), clarity of presentation (25%), and quality of response to question and answer (25%).

According to the project abstract, the system employs an in-vehicle device for collecting real-time traffic data and which uses GPS technology to record information about the position and the speed of a moving vehicle. The device uses the emerging ZigBee standard as a low-cost low-power wireless ad-hoc network which enables the device to be a member of a ZigBee network and allow the data to be transmitted to one of the roadside base stations, which relay the data to a central server.

The gathered data from all vehicles are fused and maintained on the central server. Real-time information on the server is presented to end-users through a web interface. In addition, the server maintains historical Doha traffic information database that can be used for traffic analysis and prediction.
