“A CONVERSATION ABOUT WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP”

This keynote speech will introduce leadership topics and discuss why leadership should be an important part of women and women lawyers’ education and professional development.

“THE LANDSCAPE OF WOMEN IN THE LAW IN THE MIDDLE EAST”

This session will present Melissa Deehring, Assitatnt Professor of Law, Qatar University’s working research paper examining current statistics of women lawyers in the G.C.C., the broad landscape of issues confronting women in the legal profession in the G.C.C., and presenting strategies for encouraging more women from socially restrictive cultures to enter the practice of law.

“MOVING FROM ACTION TO RESULTS”

This panel will be presented by women working in law firms and/or law departments in Qatar who have implemented training programs on skills designed to increase the percentage of women moving into positions of institutional and economic power. Our speakers will discuss the tools they have used to train young female Qatari lawyers and what actions have yielded the most impact.

“THE REALITIES OF GENDER BIAS – FACT OR FICTION”

This panel discussion will address the most effective approaches to dealing with inequality. The panel will discuss identifying and overcoming gender bias; driving satisfaction in the practice of law; overcoming negative bias from opposing counsel or colleagues; and reducing career risk as a result of negative bias.

“WHAT IS SUCCESS AND HOW TO ATTAIN IT”

This panel discussion will explore the topics and l! iterature! relating to “leaning in”, “can’t have it all”, and “work-life balance exists”. This session will explore female vs male perceptions of power and success; how to embrace your personal vision of your best life without apology or hesitation; climbing the corporate ladder; “having it all”; and creating flexibility in your job.

“MORE WOMEN LEADING IN THE COURTROOM”

Women are under-represented as judges, prosecutors and in important courtroom roles within Qatar but also in the United States according to a recent ABA report. In this panel, we will hear from prominent judges, prosecutors and trial attorneys in Qatar about their careers, challenges they face and the steps they are taking to increase the number of women in the courtrooms.

“USING GRIT AND GROWTH MINDSET TO ADVANCE WOMEN IN THE LAW”

In this workshop, we will adapt material from the ABA’s Grit Project to teach women about the importance of grit, a non-cognitive trait defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, that has been shown to predict success—often over and beyond other common measures, like intelligence or GPA.

“STRATEGIES FOR NEGOTIATING SALARY”

Salary negotiation continues to be a contentious topic, particularly in the legal field. In this workshop, participants will discuss how can women push back when the package is insufficient; how to negotiate better packages; navigating equal opportunities for partnership; and salary negotiation strategies.
