 Dr. Farid A. Touati
 
 

Dr. Farid A. Touati obtained his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Ecole Nationale des Ingenieurs de Monastir, Tunisia, in 1988. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Nagoya Institute of Technology (NIT) of Japan in 1992 and 1995, respectively. Dr. Touati was employed as a Research Associate in NIT from April 1995 to September 1997, as an Assistant Professor at Dammam College of Technology of Saudi Arabia from September 1997 to August 2001, as an Assistant Professor in Tuskegee University of Alabama, USA, from January 2001 to June 2002, as an Associate Professor at Sultan Qaboos Univerity of Oman from august 2002 to July 2010, and currently joining Qatar University as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Touati has over 13 years’ experience designing electronic systems for conventional and hard-environment applications in communications, telemetry, and signal processing. He has published more 70 papers in several international journals and conferences. Also, he has carried out successfully several grant projects in different countries in strategic areas like Bio-Engineering and Technology, Smart Irrigation, and Wireless Monitoring of Renewable Energy stations. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American physical Society (APS), the International Association of Science and Technology (IASTED) of USA.

 


 Dr. Yasser Mahgoub
 
 

Dr. Yasser Mahgoub is an architect, academic and scholar who received B Sc in Architectural Engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1978 and Doctorate in Architecture from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA in 1990. He held several academic positions since 1978 at Ain Shams University, United Arab Emirates University, and Kuwait University. Dr. Yasser teaches architectural design studios, architectural research, and architectural professional practice courses. His research interests include social and cultural aspects of architecture, sustainable architecture, architectural education and the impact of globalization on architecture.  Dr. Agatino Rizzo
 
 

Dr. Agatino Rizzo is member of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) and correspondent for the architectural magazine “Compasses”. In 2004 Agatino pursued a Master in engineering/architecture and in 2008 he successfully accomplished a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning both at University of Catania (Italy). From 2006 to 2008 he was guest researcher at Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (Germany), and Alvar Aalto Foundation (Finland). In 2009 he was Visiting Lecturer at Estonia Academy of Art (EKA) in the frame of the master program in urban studies. From 2009 to 2010 Agatino has been senior lecturer of urban and regional planning at University Technology Malaysia.

In 2008 Dr. Agatino pursued an EU training program in urban studies at Bauhaus-University Weimar. In 2009 he pursued a second EU training program in the field of evaluation of sustainability. From 2004 to 2010 he has worked for several private firms to develop concepts for urban renewals, metropolitan strategic plans, and GIS implementation. Dr. Agatino has taken part to more than 10 international design competitions, achieving mentions and publications. His main research interests are, among others, metropolitan planning, urban theory, transnational studies, urbanism, and transdisciplinary urban research.

 


 Dr. Khaled Alshare
 
 

Dr. Khaled Alshare has been teaching a variety of information systems courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. He joined Qatar University in fall 2010 and prior to that, taught at different universities in the USA for 15 years. Dr. Khaled’s teaching interests include database systems, systems analysis and design, MIS, project management, and research methods in information systems. His research interests include technology acceptance models, systems development, end-user computing, cross-cultural studies in information systems, distance education, and data envelopment analysis (DEA).

Dr. Alshare’s work appeared in various academic journals, including the Journal of Computer Information Systems, Journal of Internet Commerce, International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, International Journal of Information Management, the Journal of Information Systems Education, and International Journal of Business and Public Administration. He has served in numerous professional organizations such as the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), South-West DSI, and the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges CCSC-CP at different capacities such as a treasurer, organizer, papers chair, a board member, and track and a mini-track chair.

 


 Dr. Todd M. Thompson
 
 

Dr. Todd M. Thompson  recently completed his PhD in history at the University of Cambridge in 2010.   His specializations are: British history, European history, history of Euro-American political thought including its international dimensions and his Research Interests are: the cultural and religious dimensions of social, legal, and political thought in 20th-century Britain.

Dr. Thompson is particularly interested in the history of Anglo-Arab relations and has published articles that have explored the history of evangelical views of religious liberty in 19th-century Britain, as well as the cultural and religious contexts of British intelligence work in North Africa during World War II. Dr. Todd is currently revising his PhD dissertation, an intellectual biography of the British intelligence agent, evangelical polymath, and scholar of Islamic law, J.N.D. Anderson, for publication in book form.

 


 Dr. Osama Halabi
 
 

Dr. Osama Halabi received a BSc, in electronic engineering from Damascus University, MSc in computer science from Shanghai University, and PhD in Information Science from Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) in 1992, 1998, and 2001, respectively. He was a software engineer at the National Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC), Damascus, Syria, from 1992 to 1995, an assistant professor at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology as a Fujitsu Endowed Chair (Fujitsu Co.,) from 2001 to 2003, a researcher in Virtual Systems Laboratory at Gifu University from 2003 to 2006, an assistant professor at Iwate University, Japan, from 2006 to 2010.

Dr. Halabi participated in many research projects and published more than 32 refereed technical papers in international conferences and journals, 35 short conference articles and technical reports, two books, and one patent. He received many awards for best work in research, interactive systems, information technology, and for committee service. His research interests include virtual reality, haptic interface, computer human interaction, interactive systems, and laser graphics. He is a member of Virtual Reality Society of Japan (VRSJ), IEEE Technical Committee on Haptics (TCH), The Society for Art and Science, and Syrian Computer Society (SCS).

 


 Dr. Nazzal Kisswani 
      
 

Dr. Nazzal Kisswani received his LLB at Al-Ahliyya Amman University, College of Law, in 1994, his LLM in 2004 at El Nileen University, a Master of International Trade and Commerce Law in 2007 at Macquarie University, Department of Business law and is currently working on PhD at Macquarie University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Business Law. Dr. Kisswani has won several awards: Outstanding Academic Achievement Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) resulting in a Government funded scholarship, The Commonwealth Government’s Research Training Scheme (RTS) (tuition fee) 2008 - 2011 and Additional Funding to support PhD research project. His teaching interests include Business Law, International Trade Law, Corporation Law, Banking and Financial Law, and Media and Telecommunication Law.

During 1999 - 2005 Dr. Kisswani lectured in the Department of Business and Finance, Al-Arabia College, Amman, Jordan; then during 2009 – 2010, he lectured and tutored in the Department of Business Law, Macquarie University, in Sydney, Australia.Media Law, Telecommunication Law, Broadcasting Law, International Trade Law, Contract law, Business law are among his research interests and he has published several books and peer reviewed journals, articles and proceedings. Dr Kisswani is a member of Jordanian Bar Association and Communication and Media law Association Incorporated (Australia) (2009). Additionally, he is a Trustee Board Member at Arabia College, Amman in Jordan 2000 to the present.

 


 Dr. Farouk Elabaseri
 
 

Dr. Farouk Elabaseri holds his Bachelor Degree from El Mansoura University, Egypt in1990, his LLM from Ain Shams University, Egypt in 1994 and his PhD in law from Montpellier, France in 2000. He has lectured for over two decades in civil law in Egypt, Oman and United Arab Emirates. Dr. Farouk is Associate Professor of Civil Law at College of Law, Monifia University in Egypt and is currently Associate Professor of Civil Law at Ajman University, United Arab Emirates.

He has published extensively on civil law, especially intellectual property law. He wrote several books in different areas of civil law, including the civil liability of the accountant, the right to information in field of sports, and the economic concept of copyright. Dr. Elabaseri has also published many legal articles, including, the legal protection for the consumer, and the impact of globalization on the employment contract and state and private sector in the era of globalization. He participated in several conferences, seminars and workshops in Egypt and in Arab states. He also participated as a trainer and trainee in several legal programmes. Farouk Elabaseri is one of the pioneering Arab scholars who provided assistance in accreditation programs among the Egyptian universities.
 

 


 Dr. Nader Meskin
 

 

Dr. Nader Meskin received the BSc degree from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1998, the MSc degree from the University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran, in 2001, and the Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in 2008. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University from Nov. 2008 to Oct. 2009 and at Texas A&M University of Qatar from Nov. 2009 to Aug. 2010. His research interests include fault detection and isolation (FDI), autonomous network of unmanned vehicles, time delay systems, Markovian jump systems and system biology.

 


 Dr. Amro Maher 
 
 

Dr. Amro Maher received his PhD in Business administration with an international emphasis from Old Dominion University in 2008. He has taught various courses at Indiana State University and Old Dominion University. These courses include, consumer behavior, international marketing, advertising, marketing research and services marketing. His research interests are in the area of international marketing, with a specific emphasis on consumers’ perceptions of foreign products. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in International Marketing Review, the Journal of Consumer Marketing and the Journal of the Global Academy of Marketing Science. His professional experience is within the area of marketing research.

 


  Dr. Clayton Keller
 
 

Dr. Clayton Keller's almost 35-year career in special education in the United States has comprised: work as a paraprofessional and teacher for students with emotional/behavioral disorders, doctoral studies at the University of Virginia, teacher preparation and research for 13 years at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and his most recent position supporting state initiatives in the preparation and retention of special educators in Minnesota.

His scholarship has been in the areas of inclusion, the construct of learning disabilities, educators who have disabilities, and international special education. His international experiences have included: a 1997 Fulbright Scholar Award at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway; a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award at Middle East Technical University in Turkey in 2003; serving as Co-Director of the 2007 conference, “The International Special Education Forum,” in Peru; and, in 2009, being a Visiting Researcher at the University of Agder in Norway.

Dr. Keller is a member of the Board of Directors of The Council for Exceptional Children and a Past President of its Division of International Special Education and Services.

 


 Dr. Haitham Alkhateeb 
 
 

Dr. Haitham Alkhateeb completed his BS (Mathematics) from College of Science and Technology, Jerusalem (1987), MS (Mathematics) from Ohio University, USA (1989), and Ph.D. (Mathematics Education) from Ohio University, USA (1995).

Prior to joining Qatar University, Dr. Haitham taught at Philadelphia University (Jordan), United Arab Emirates University (United Arab Emirates), Arizona State University (USA), Miami University (USA), and most recently at University of Indianapolis (USA) from 2001-2010. He has taught Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Arabic Language and Culture courses and has published several research papers and delivered numerous talks and workshops. Dr. Alkhateeb’s research interests include, self-concept, students’ approaches to learning mathematics, mathematics achievement, pedagogy of Mathematics and Arabic Language, technology integration in teaching mathematics, and in-service and pre-service mathematics teacher preparation. Among his teaching interests are: Undergraduate and Graduate Mathematics Education courses, Undergraduate and Graduate Instructional Technology courses, Undergraduate Mathematics courses and Supervising Student Teachers.

 


 Dr. Murat Khairzhan-uli Munkin
 
 

Dr. Murat Khairzhan-uli Munkin is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics and Finance. He is a native of Kazakhstan, received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Moscow State University (Russia), and received his Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University (Bloomington, USA). He has been a tenured faculty at the Departments of Economics in the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, USA) and University of South Florida (Tampa, USA).

His interests are in Microeconometrics (Applied and Theoretical), Health Economics and Bayesian Econometrics. His research is centered on developing new models and methods to offer practical solutions to analyze very general economic problems which would be used by other practitioners for their own research.
He is an econometrician who has strong interests in application in Health Economics. However, his applied research interests are not limited to Health Economics only and extend to other areas of economics in which the modeling issues overlap with his expertise. Dr. Munkin has published among others in the Econometrics Journal, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Business and Economics Statistics and Health Economics.

 


  Dr. Eric Ping Hung Li
 
 

Dr. Eric Ping Hung Li has taught at Schulich School of Business in York University and from 2008 to 2010 was a Teaching Assistant, York University, Canada. His research interests include multicultural marketing, consumer creativity, consumer online privacy, consumer discipline. Dr. Eric earned his PhD in Marketing at the Department of Marketing, Schulich School of Business, York University, Canada, in 2010. Prior to that he was awarded a Master in Anthropology from the Department of Anthropology at Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong in 2003. In 2002, Dr. Li received a Bachelor Degree in Fashion and Textiles at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Dr. Eric is a member of the Association for Consumer Research (ACR), the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the Hong Kong Anthropological Society (HKAS). He has published numerous Peer Reviewed Journal articles, book chapter and proceedings and made more than 15 presentations and seminars at international events worldwide. Dr. Li has been honoured as (2009) a Doctoral Fellow, American Marketing Association – Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium at Georgia State University in Atlanta and as (2006) a Discussant in Mittelstaedt Doctoral Symposium at University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

 


 Amith  Khandakar
 
 

Amith Khandakar earned his degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from North South University in Bangladesh. He graduated as the Valedictorian (President Gold Medal Recipient) of his university. His final Year thesis ‘Analytical Evaluation of Timing Offset Error in OFDM System’ was published in 2010 Second International Conference on Communication Software and Networks (check thesis on this link).

Prior to coming to Qatar University, he was a Teaching Assistant and Lab instructor for two years for the following courses: Mobile and wireless communication Systems, Principle of Digital Communications, Introduction to Communication, Calculus and Analytical Geometry, Verilog HDL: Modeling, Simulation and Synthesis. Simultaneously, Mr. Khandakar was a Lab instructor for the following courses: Programming course ‘C’, Verilog HDL, General Physics Course. After graduation Mr. Amith worked as a Consultant in Qatar Islamic Insurance Company and in a private company that is a sub contractor to Qtel in Doha.

 


 Muhammad Qadeer Haider
 
 

Muhammad Qadeer Haider completed his bachelor of science from University of the Punjab, Pakistan in 2003, followed by an MSc degree in Mathematics at University of Sargodha in 2005. During and after Masters in Mathematics, Muhammad worked as Lecturer for more than three years at the Intermediate College level.

In 2009, Mr. Haider graduated from Western Illinois University, Illinois, USA and received an MS degree in Computer Science. He taught various courses of Mathematics and Computer Science for three years while working as graduate assistant with Academic Services Department, Western Illinois University, USA. Prior to joining Qatar University, he was working as Database developer with Marlabs Inc, New Jersey USA. Additionally, he is a DELL Certified System Expert and also certified on Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Implementation and Maintenance.

 


 Shameem Shahulhameed
 
 

Shameem Shahulhameed received her Master of Software Systems (MS) degree from the University of St Thomas, Minnesota, USA in 2002, after my Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree from the University of Kerala, in 1997. She has also received professional training in IBM Mainframe and Software Quality Assurance Analysis.

Ms Shameem has a total of ten years’ experience in the field of Computer Science teaching, software development and Quality Analysis in various institutions/organizations in the United States.  She has designed and implemented training courses, e-learning programs and special programs based on needs- assessments. Additionally Ms Shahulhameed has also given training to students in fundamental information technology courses as well as in advanced courses of Object Oriented analysis and Database Management Systems.

 


 Faouzi  Abousalham
 
 

Faouzi Abousalham received his Bachelor degree in Statistics and Master degree in Applied Mathematics from Hunter College in New York, NY (2008). He has worked as an Adjunct Lecturer for the Mathematics and Statistics Department at Hunter College and The Borough of Manhattan Community College. In these courses, Elementary Probability and Statistics and Elementary Algebra, he taught interactive software used to analyze data, and assisted students in using Generalized Linear Regression models while instructing them on statistical estimation and hypothesis testing to analyze collected data sets using Data Desk. Additionally, Mr. Faouzi helped students to advance their study of uncertainty or mathematics of chance by using many theories of probabilities. In addition, he prepared the students for their Freshman Skills Assessment Test, required for transfer to upper division of The City University of New York, as well as for more advanced math courses.

Along with work experience, Mr. Abousalham received an enriched education at a liberal arts university. This education, while focused in Mathematics and Statistics, has also been strong in the humanities. Courses in computer science, business administration, urban studies and economics were all a part of his educational experience. He integrates what he learned in those classes into his work as a math lecturer.

 


 James Wilson
 
 

James Wilson has worked in a variety of educational contexts, including secondary schools, commercial enterprises and tertiary education institutions. Before coming to Qatar, Mr. Wilson’s career has taken him to a number of countries, including China, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Wilson’s professional interests include language testing and curriculum & syllabus design. He has also been involved in developing language tests and copy editing.

 


 

 James Scotland
   

Once Mr. James Scotland had obtained his Bachelor of Education, he started his teaching career in a challenging outer-London elementary school. After teaching there for two years, he left to go to Australia. Whilst in Australia, he gained an insight into the Australian educational system through relief teaching in various elementary schools throughout Sydney. At this time, he completed my CELTA with International House Sydney.

Mr. Scotland then made the transition into teaching English as an additional language. He taught English in South Korea for over three years, then in Ottawa, Canada for one year. Whilst working, he completed his Master’s of Education (Applied Linguistics). Prior to arriving at The University of Qatar, James taught English for academic purposes at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Whilst at Bilkent, he obtained his DELTA.

 


 Aymen Eltayeb Elsheikh
 
 

Dr. Aymen Eltayeb Elsheikh expects to receive a (2011) PhD in English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL/ESL) Education from the Department of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA. In 2005, he earned an MS in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH, USA and before that a BA (1996) in English Education at Omdurman Islamic University in Omdurman, Sudan. Among his research interests are EFL Teacher Education, The Sociopolitical and Cultural Contexts of Second Language Teaching and EFL Assessment. In reverse chronological order, Elshaikh has taught EFL Assessment (Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA), Arabic as a Foreign Language (Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA), Academic Reading and Writing (Ivy Tech Community College, Bloomington, IN, USA), English for Specific Purposes (Manchester Community Resource Center, Manchester, NH, USA), ELT Teaching Methods (Omdurman Islamic University, Omdurman, Sudan) and General English (Sudan and Oman).

 


 Indrit Bulku
 
 

Indrit Bulku earned a Master's degree in English Language Education: Institute of Educational Sciences, Yeditepe University, Turkey in 2010. The Bachelor’s degree in English Language Education was awarded by the Faculty of Education, Marmara University, Turkey in 2003 as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Violin and Music Studies from the Academy of Fine Arts, Albania, in 1995.

Mr. Indrit has taught academic reading and writing courses to undergraduate and MBA students at Yeditepe University (Turkey) for 7 years. In addition, He has assisted in the coordination of reading and writing program at Yeditepe University, Foundation Program for 6 years, with duties including preparation of weekly vocabulary worksheets, providing feedback for the coordinator, organizing workshops for new recruits, holding remedial classes, evaluating teachers’ performance in writing classes and giving feedback on writing assessment. Learner training and CALL are among Mr Bulko's research interests.

  


 Ismail Fayed
 
 

Ismail Fayed earned his MA in Educational Technology and TESOL from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2009. He has two post-graduate Specialized and Professional diplomas in TEFL from Ain Shams University and a BA in TEFL from Mansoura University in Egypt. He has been in the teaching profession for the last ten years where he taught English in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. He is a co-editor of the recently published volume Computers in ELT, 2010. His professional interests include Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), teacher training and materials development. Mr. Fayed serves as TESOL Arabia Webmaster and he is the founder/ chair of the first TESOL Arabia conference online (TACON Online 2010).

 


 Dr. Nada Eltaiba
 

Dr. Nada Eltaiba has a PhD in Social Work and Social Policy, a Masters degree in Counselling and a BA in Social Work.  She has an extensive experience as a social work practitioner, researcher and as an educator.  She worked as an academic at The University of Western Australia, Curtin University of Technology in Australia and at Al-Balqa Applied University in Jordan.   She also worked as a practitioner in various settings in mental health, cross- cultural practices, families, and refugees.    Her main research interest is in mental health, cross-cultural practice, ethics and refugees.

 


 Stacey Wizner
 

Stacey Wizner is a recent graduate of Northern Arizona University’s MA-TESL program.  She has taught reading, writing, listening and speaking at the Program in Intensive English in Flagstaff, Arizona for two years.  Her interests include curriculum design, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, and pronunciation.  Stacey has lived in Granada, Spain; Quito, Ecuador; and Veracruz, Mexico, where she is spending the summer of 2010.

 


 Dr. Rania  Khalil
 

Dr. Rania Khalil is a graduate of Cairo University College of Engineering, 1997. She received her master’s degree from the same University in 1999 and her PhD in 2003 from Helwan University, Egypt.   In addition to the core architectural course work, her academic experience and teaching activities include lecture courses in planning theory, housing policies, urban conservation, urban design, and urban planning legislation.  Her research focuses on sustainable master planning, environmental upgrading projects, new urbanism, and the impact of regulations on urban planning and development.

In 2005, Dr. Khalil moved to the United States and continued her professional career as a programmer/ facility planner. She has gained a solid market experience in portfolio strategy and facility planning and had the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary teams of architects, planners, engineers, artists and other consultants to comprehensively coordinate integrated design solutions.  Dr. Khalil is a LEED AP, an associate member of the AIA, a young leader of the ULI, and currently pursuing her Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate.

 


 Kandasamy Rajan
 

Kandasamy Rajan was awarded the MSc Engineering Mathematics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, the MSc Statistics from the University of Leicester, UK, the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education)  from Greenwich University, UK and the BEng Civil Engineering from City University, London, UK. 

Mr. Rajan has experience teaching foundation mathematics, Calculus, business mathematics, engineering mathematics, statistics, differential equations, partial differential equations, and numerical methods.  Mr. Kandasamy’s research interests lie in the areas of magneto hydrodynamics, asymptotic and numerical methods, and development of aero acoustic theory.

 


 Dr. Suzanne Shams
 

Dr. Suzanne Shams is a U.S. attorney, licensed to practice in the state of Maryland.  She received a Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C., a Master’s Degree in Public International Law with a focus in Human Rights and Refugee Law from the American University in Cairo, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside. 

During her studies in D.C., Dr. Shams worked at Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the Tahirih Justice Center, and the Council of the District of Columbia.  She served as a research and teaching assistant throughout her graduate career and was a volunteer Lecturer of Refugee Law for the Cairo Community Interpreter’s Program. 

Dr. Shams served as a senior staff member on the Administrative Law Review, was regularly published in the Human Rights Brief, and was runner-up in the 14th Annual African Human Rights Moot Court competition in Johannesburg, South Africa where she argued the final round before the Chief Justice of the South African Constitutional Court.

 


 Özgür  Parlak
 

Özgür Parlak graduated with honors and was awarded the Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language/Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona in 2010.  In 2003, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in American Literature at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey.

Mr. Özgür has taught English as a Foreign/Second Language in various contexts including Turkey, Thailand and the United States for five years. During his time in the United States, he also taught academic writing classes at Northern Arizona University. 

Mr. Parlak has an insatiable passion for learning and teaching languages. In addition, he is actively involved in research projects. His research interests include second language acquisition and phonology.  When he has free time, he enjoys photography, scuba-diving, chess, travelling and learning about different cultures.

 

 


  Dr. Daoud Al Badriyeh 
 
 

Dr. Daoud Al-Badriyeh completed his PhD in Pharmacoeconomics at Monash University in Melbourne, 2010. Prior to this, he obtained a BPharm at Al-Isra University (Jordan, 2001) before his research career commenced while undertaking an Honours Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Sydney, 2005. During his time at Monash University, Dr. Al-Badriyeh held a part-time teaching appointment with the Pharmacy Faculty and undertook a Graduate Certificate in Pharmacoeconomics at the Business and Economics Faculty.

Dr. Al-Badriyeh’s research interests lie in applying economic evaluations and decision-analytic modeling to assess medical interventions in all areas. He conducted clinical studies in humans, and is developing economic models and Monte Carlo simulations for hospitals in Australia and overseas. His research has majorly included framework projects on utilizing the high-cost systemic antifungals in Australian practices. Other research relates to cardiovascular medications and diabetes.  Furthermore, he has experience in analytical assay development, and dosage and formulation research.

Dr. Al-Badriyeh is a recipient of a number of awards and grants. He is a reviewer for international journals and the leading author in a variety of peer-reviewed publications. He presented at international conferences, has an invited book chapter, and has also received several invitations to write expert reviews for international journals.

 


 Dr. Jon Truby
 

Dr. Jon Truby graduated from Newcastle Law School at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (England) in 2005, receiving a First Class Honors Degree with prizes in his LLB (Bachelor of Laws) Degree.  In 2006 he completed the professional legal qualification of Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the College of Law in York (England) with an interest in commercial and corporate law, before going on to practice law in the City of London. 

In the last few years Mr. Truby has pursued his own research interests in an academic legal career, conducting a doctoral study into the law of environmental taxation as a tool of managing resources, and has a range of wider interests especially in commercial law, chancery subjects, revenue law, environmental law and energy law.  He has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the LLB and LLM (Master of Laws) courses at Newcastle Law School such as contract law, environmental law and planning law, alongside his other faculty responsibilities.  

Being part of a number of research networks, he publishes in his field of expertise and has received research sponsorships.  Mr. Truby will complete his Ph.D in Law in early 2011 and intends to utilize his academic portfolio to contribute to the College’s teaching and research interests.

 


 Dr. William Spates
 

Dr. William Spates has a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He has taught at Shorter College, Auburn University, and Haverford College in the United States, and Eastern Mediterranean University in Northern Cyprus.

Dr. Will's research interests include the role of medicine and disease in early modern literature and the idea of otherness on the early modern stage with a specific interest in Anglo-Ottoman relations. He is working on a book-length project exploring the relationship between consumption and corruption in early modern literature.

 


 Dr. Muffasir Badshah
 

Dr. Muffasir Badshah received his Bachelors degree in Applied Mathematics from University of Houston-Downtown in 1997. He earned a Dual Masters degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Drexel University in 2002. He worked on two projects at Drexel -one on short term equity dynamics and endogenous maret fluctuations and the other on the properties of a spin market model based on the Ising Hamiltonian. He joined the Department of Statistics at Florida State University where he earned a Masters degree in Mathematical Statistics in 2009 and took interdisciplinary courses in Financial Mathematics to complete his PhD. 

Dr. Badshah’s strengths are in Computational Statistics. His research interests include Monte Carlo methods with applications to finance, statistical arbitrage methods, and dynamic general equilibrium modeling of heterogeneous agent economies with focus on Asset Pricing.

 


  Shiney Rachel Rajan
 

 
Ms. Shiney Rajan pursued higher studies in India and graduated with First Class in B.Arch from the University of Kerala, India. Her career has led her to work with leading Architectural, Consultancy and Construction establishments in Qatar like ATKINS and QDVC.

Ms. Shiney is currently working for QDVC as an Architect Assistant. QDVC is a  joint venture between Qatari Diar and VINCI Construction Grand Projects.  She worked with the LUSAIL project and has also worked as an Intern Architect at ATKINS .  Additionally, Ms. Rajan has worked on projects like the Visitor’s Center for the Qatar Bahrain Causeway (QBC), National Convention Centre Car Park, National Data Centre and the RAMADA Hotel - Extension project.

 


  Mohamed Zayed
 

Mr. Mohamed Zayed was born in Cairo and grew up in Switzerland where he graduated in physics from the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 1999. After a few years in the telecom, financial, and consulting industry, he prepared a PhD thesis at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ). Mr. Mohamed's current research interests are in the field of neutron scattering and low dimensional and frustrated quantum spin systems, with focus on extreme experimental conditions such as low temperatures, high pressures and magnetic fields.  

 


  Dr. Moain Sadeq
 

Dr. Moain Sadeq received his PhD from the Free University of Berlin and has over 15 years experience in teaching and developing curricula of history and archaeology. He was an associate professor at the University of Toronto (until 2010) and taught previously at the University of Chicago and Montclair State University, New Jersey. In addition, he co-founded the Palestinian Department of Antiquities in 1994 and Al-Aqsa University in Gaza in 1991.

His expertise includes over 25 years of research and scholarly field work. His most recent research was at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, and previously he conducted archaeological excavations and surveys at Islamic and Pre-Islamic sites, including an early Islamic site in Qatar.  Dr. Moain’s teaching, research and publications are multi-lingual. He authored a book in German, co-authored two books in English, translated a book (from English into Arabic) and published numerous papers in refereed journals. His major interests are in Islamic history and archaeology, urbanism and civilization, history of architecture and art, peoples and cultures of the Middle East, women and gender in Ancient Muslim World.

Dr. Sadeq attended conferences and organized international exhibits, including an historic exhibit in Qatar in 1996. He volunteered in awareness programs, producing cultural documentaries and participated actively in bridging cultures and fostering mutual understanding. He has been elected a board member of the American Anthropological Association and has twice received the Fulbright Senior Award and for five years, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Scholar Award.  Under initiatives sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) in Washington, DC, Dr. Sadeq was awarded a grant to lecture at Montclair State University as a Fulbright Visiting Specialist and participated in the International Visitor Program entitled "Museums and Cultural Heritage" in June 2000.

 


  Dr. Ali M. Kanso
 

Dr. Ali M. Kanso is an international public relations and integrated marketing communication expert. His professional background includes work as a reporter, community relations director, advertising copywriter, and media consultant.

Dr. Kanso’s teaching, research, and consulting areas focus on cross-cultural communication, strategic planning in public relations, issues management, and international advertising. He is the author of more than 35 refereed articles, plus book chapters. He has been named as one of the top 14 contributors to international advertising research in credited journals.

Dr. Kanso is widely traveled in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. He has participated in seminars and workshops sponsored by the Direct Marketing Association, Promotional Products Association International, and Public Relations Society of America. In 1998 he was named to the National Curriculum Task Team of the National Communication Association to assess and improve public relations education in the U.S. and overseas. He currently serves on three journal editorial boards.

Dr. Kanso has taught at Tennessee State University, Slippery Rock University, Kansas State University, Emerson College, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. He received his B.A. from the Lebanese University and completed his M.S. and Ph.D. at Ohio University.

 


  Antonio Gonzales Jr. 
 

Antonio S. Gonzales Jr. has been teaching Electronics for the past 15 years. His specialization is in Electronics Instrumentation and Control.

 

 


  Dr. Abdou Ndoye
 

Dr Abdou Ndoye served as the Assessment Director for the Watson School of Education at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington prior to joining Qatar University, . He has extensive experience in program assessment, university accreditation (SACS and NEASC), as well as professional accreditation (NCATE). He also teaches in the area of Instructional Design and Evaluation, Learning outcomes assessment, and Research Methods.

Dr. Ndoye's research focuses on student learning, program outcomes assessment and continuous improvement. He earned his doctorate from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut where he also served as university assessment liaison. Recent scholarship includes building a culture of assessment, investigating student achievement, analyzing key variables in teacher working conditions and the implementation of eportfolios in students assessment.

 


  Dr Maher Abu-Munshar
 

Dr Maher Abu-Munshar completed his PhD in 2003 (Dundee, UK) and won in 2005 the Islamic Jerusalem Studies prize for young scholars from the Islamic Research Academy [ISRA] in UK. In 2008 he was awarded Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (Pg CertTHE) in Dundee, UK.  Prior to joining Qatar University, Dr Abu-Munshar was a Visiting Senior Lecturer to the Department of Islamic History and Civilization at the University of Malaya, Malaysia and before that he was a lecturer at the Al-Maktoum Institute at the University of Aberdeen (UK) where he worked since 2003.

His teaching and research expertise lies in the areas of Islamic history, with a special interest in Islamic Jerusalem history, history of Muslim - Christian Relations and the Crusaders. He is the author of Islamic Jerusalem and Its Christians: A History of Tolerance and Tensions (IB Tauris, 2007) as well as many articles on different aspects of Islamic history, Christian-Muslim Relations and the study of Islam and Muslims. The most recent articles are: Fatimids, Crusaders and the fall of Islamic Jerusalem, Foes or Allies? In Al-Masaq: Islam & the Medieval Mediterranean Journal (Routledge) April 2010 and the Compatibility of Islam with Pluralism: Two Historical Precedents. Journal of Islam and Civilisational Renewal (Pluto Journals) July 2010.  Additionally, as a major mark of recognition of his scholarly work he was elected as a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) in May 2008 and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society (UK) in April 2009.

 


  Dr. Nishan Havandjian
 

Dr. Nishan Havandjian received his B.A in English, including teacher credentials, from Haigazian University in Beirut. He attended the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia for his M.A. After working for a couple of years for an English language newsweekly in Beirut, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to pursue his PhD in Journalism at the University of Texas, Austin. Before joining Qatar University, he was on the faculty of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he served for 15 years as head of the journalism department.

Dr. Havandjian’s teaching covers: news writing and reporting with added online elements, magazine article writing, global journalism, introduction to PR, contemporary advertising, public affairs reporting, journalism ethics, and mass media in a multicultural society. He was the faculty adviser for the student daily for six years. He worked for short stints with print media in California, Utah and Arizona. For eight years, Dr. Nishan also served as executive director of the California Intercollegiate Press Association, the group uniting all student media in California. His main research interests include the acculturation role played by ethnic media in the Diaspora.

 


  David Frear
 

Mr. David Frear has taught English in Taiwan and his native New Zealand. While his early career involved teaching predominantly general English, he has recently been teaching academic English as an ESOL tutor at The University of Auckland. He particularly enjoys teaching grammar, syntax and writing.

Mr. Frear’s education has seen him earn a BA, a BSc and an MA (Honours). He should graduate with a PhD in 2011. His MA investigated consciousness-raising tasks and cultures of learning. His doctorate is examining the effectiveness of written corrective feedback on the accuracy of student writing. As a researcher, he is currently interested in whether pedagogical practices contribute to second language acquisition. He has presented at conferences and has published in their proceedings. He is currently working on a number of journal articles.  

 


  Dr. Robert Meeds
 

Dr. Robert Meeds has a B.S. in journalism (1983) and an M.A. in English (1990), both from Ball State University. He received a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1997. His research focuses on applying psycholinguistic models of language comprehension to advertising copy and persuasive texts and how changes in semantic and syntactic components of texts affect consumer comprehension, memory and persuasion. He has authored or co-authored more than 35 refereed publications and conference papers. His research has appeared in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, Psychology and Marketing, International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Newspaper Research Journal, among others.

Dr. Meeds has fourteen years of academic experience as an assistant/associate professor, graduate program director and department chair. He also worked for ten years as a newspaper advertising director and graphic designer. As a marketing communications research consultant, he has conducted brand perception, copytesting, and web site usability studies.

 


  Myrna El Fakhry Tuttle
 

Myrna El Fakhry Tuttle is a Lebanese American lawyer with substantial academic and professional experience in international law, human rights and the Middle East. She received a law degree from St-Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon where she worked as a lawyer for two prominent law firms.

She received a Masters degree in Human Rights and Democratization from the University of Malta. She also received an LL.M in International Legal Studies from American University Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. She worked for international organizations, in the United States of America, conducting research and writing on the rule of law, freedom of expression, elections and education in the Middle East.

 


  Dr. Darlene Everhart
 

Dr. Darlene Everhart will join Qatar University in fall 2010 as a visiting Assistant Professor of the Long Eighteenth-Century English Literature in the Department of English Literature and Linguistics, College of Arts and Sciences.  In 2000 she joined the Ph.D. program in Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  She taught freshman writing at the Pittsburgh campus till 2004, then taught freshman writing at Carnegie Mellon in Qatar from 2004 to 2009.  She was awarded her Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies In May 2009 at a special hooding ceremony during the second senior graduation at Carnegie Mellon-Qatar.

Dr. Everhart’s research focuses on the eighteenth-century discourse of accounting and how authors of little-known eighteenth-century island narratives used the discourse of accounting to both portray the island experience and construct notions of authorship.

 


  Dr. Barbara Hong
 

Dr. Barbara Hong is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Penn State University - Altoona College. She obtained her Ph.D. from Columbia University in Mild-Moderate Disabilities in addition to three Masters in Policy and Administration, Instructional Practices, and Learning Disabilities. Dr. Hong has been working with people with disabilities for over 25 years in various countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Myanmar, Micronedia Islands, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. She has been a school administrator in Harlem, New York City, and has taught in Hawaii, Texas, and Long Island.

Dr. Hong will be visiting Qatar University in the spring of 2011 as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in the College of Education. She is also the First Honorable Visiting Scholar at the Taipei Municipal University of Education. Dr. Hong has published widely and has been an international consultant on various disability issues. Her research focuses on self-determination, self-regulation, learning disabilities, teacher quality, and transformational leadership. Dr. Hong is a certified special educator, school principal, and district administrator.

 


  Dr. Sara Al Dahir
 

Dr. Sara Al-Dahir will be joining Qatar University as a Fulbright Lecturer for the 2010-2011. She is joining Qatar University from Xavier University of Louisiana where she is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical & Administrative Sciences. Dr. Al-Dahir maintains an internal medicine practice site at Louisiana State University Medical Center of Louisiana University Hospital in New Orleans. Her practice focuses on a team based approach in critical care and trauma medicine and nutrition support. She is a Licensed Pharmacist registered in the state of Louisiana.

Dr. Al-Dahir earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Tulane University in Cell and Molecular Biology and History. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Xavier University of Louisiana. She is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and certified in Adult Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Dr. Al-Dahir’s areas of research interest are nutrition support, critical care medicine, international health and health disparities among immigrant communities. She is currently a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), Louisiana Society of Health System Pharmacists (LSHP), Rho Chi and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies. She is a board member of Gulf Medical Relief Fund, Inc, a non-profit international medical relief agency.

 


  Dalia Hamdy
 

Dalia Hamdy is pursuing her PhD in pharmacokinetics at University of Alberta, Canada (Scheduled date of completion August/September 2010). Prior to that she finished her Master Degree in pharmaceutical analytical chemistry (2004) and obtained bachelors of pharmacy with honours (2000), from Alexandria University, Egypt. Dalia held multiple teaching assistance positions in Egypt and in Canada.

Ms. Hamdy has an interest in studying the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and metabolism of some cardiovascular and antifungal medications. She is also interested in developing HPLC methods for the quantitation of drugs in biological specimens and dosage forms. She has published more than 11 peer reviewed papers, presented around 15 abstracts and was awarded some national and international scientific awards and scholarships. Dalia is a licensed Clinical pharmacist in Egypt and in Canada and is a member of several international pharmaceutical and chemical scientific organizations. She helped in reviewing papers for international journals and is a reviewer for NPRP and UREP programs in State of Qatar.

 

 


  Dr. Ali H. Eid
 

Dr. Ali H. Eid holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Sciences from Ohio State University.  He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute at OSU, where his research was conducted in the Vascular Physiology Division. After finishing his doctoral courses, Dr. Eid opted for track specialization in “Molecular Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomics, and Therapeutics”, also from OSU. Dr. Eid had previously obtained his Master of Science (MS) degree from Bowling Green State University, USA. His undergraduate degree was a Bachelor of Science (Biology) received from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

Dr. Eid's laboratory is interested in the molecular signaling implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension and atherosclerosis. Using molecular, cellular and pharmacological approaches, Dr. Eid’s laboratory focuses on the cAMP signaling in human arteriolar smooth muscle cells. In addition, Dr. Eid and his collaborators have recently identified herbs with antihypertensive effects and are currently elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms. Another research angle in Dr. Eid’s laboratory deals with the regulation of vascular alpha 2C-adrenergic receptors. The long terms goals of Dr. Eid's laboratory include the identification of novel targets and/or compounds with antihypertensive therapeutic potential.

 
 


  Dr. Abouzeid Shalaby
 

Dr. Abouzeid Shalaby graduated from North Carolina State University, USA, in 2004 with a PhD in Particle Physics and with a Minor in Mathematics. He has a Masters Degree in Particle Physics from the same University and another Masters in High Energy Physics from Mansoura University, Egypt.

For more than five academic years, he held positions of assistant professor and associate professor at various universities in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia, where he spent three years working in Qassim University. Dr. Shalaby was a teaching assistant at North Carolina State University for more than three years.

Dr. Abouzeid Shalaby has written more than fifteen articles many of which have been published in outstanding and highly ranked journals. Concerning this, he has a rapid communication in Physical Review D for the discovery of a possible new matter phase. Moreover, very recently, he introduced a solution for the ghost problem in the Lee-Wick standard model. Dr. Abouzeid Shalaby has been awarded the National Award of Egypt in Physical Sciences for the year 2008 and the award of Distinguished University Research Paper from Qassim University for the same year.

 

 


  Dr. Alaa Al Hawari
 

Dr. Al Hawari completed his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 2004 and 2000, respectively. He finished his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan in 1996.

Dr. Al Hawari was employed at The Hashemite University in Jordan, as an assistant professor, teaching several courses in the department of Water Management and Environment. Before that, Dr. Al Hawari was an assistant professor at the Applied Science Private University, Jordan, in the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. Al Hawari was also working part time as a recycling coordinator at Concordia University, Canada at the Department of Health and Safety.

Dr. Al Hawari’s main areas of research interest are drinking water treatment and wastewater reclamation/reuse, with specific expertise in membrane rejection and fouling, biosorption and selective adsorption. His latest research was related to the Intensification of reverse osmosis technology for desalination by using a new technology which applies an inhomogeneous electrical field for permeate flux enhancement. The research was funded from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany. Dr. Al Hawari has published in international refereed indexed journals and conferences; his publications are well cited by peers. He was granted several funded researches from public and private sectors.

 


  Ahmed Helmy Ahmed Salem
 

Mr. Ahmed Helmy earned his Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning in April 2004 from Cairo University. At Zagazig University,  Mr Helmy taught GIS within the computer subject during the first semester of AY 2009-2010. At Minia University, in the Faculty of Fine Arts, he taught Town Planning in the Department of Architecture.

Mr. Helmy worked as a regional and urban planner and GIS specialist for the General Organization for Physical Planning, as a consultant to the High Commission for Development of Makkah with Zuhair Fayed Partnership.

Mr. Helmy has published research in the fields of sustainable development, environments, industrial development, GIS, urban planning, informations systems, and e-government.

 


  Dr. Phillip L Watson
 

Dr. Phillip L Watson is a professor of biology who has taught and done research on ecological, entomological and forensic topics in Africa, Asia, South, Central, and North America and in Qatar. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Qatar University in 2009 and had a small project while he was in Qatar. He is now emeritus full Professor of Ferris State University (FSU) in the US with over 30 years of teaching and research experience.

Dr. Watson has developed several programs including a very successful forensic biology program at FSU. His most recent research was in forensic entomology. He has numerous research and teaching awards including two Senior Fulbright awards and has published and presented his research often at national and international meetings. He has also guided numerous students to finalized research projects, publications and presentations. He is married to Maureen E Watson who is also emeriti of FSU and a full professor and will be joining QU this fall in the library.

 


  Farah Abdulmutaleb El-Qawasma
 

Ms. Farah Abdulmutaleb El-Qawasma is a spring 2010 graduate of Qatar University. Here, she has earned her Bachellor's degree in Computer Engineering.

Ms. Farah will commence her academic teaching career as a Teaching Assistant in the Computer Science and Engineering Department of the College of Engineering.

 


  Melissa Mullins
 

Melissa Mullins received her Master’s degree from Portland State University and is, at present, ABD in her PhD program at the University of Connecticut. Her current research interests are focused on adaptation theory, folktales and fairy tales, and 19th century British literature, which she is exploring in her dissertation, “Transforming Fairyland: The Politics of Adaptation and the Fairy Tale.” Recently, she has published articles on the language Postcolonialism and 19th century fashion writing and on L.M Montgomery’s creation of a character straddling Romanticism and Modernism in the Canadian Anne of Green Gables books for children. This year, she received a grant to work on a documentary about traveling around the United States to which she is contributing interviews, narrative impressions, and voice over recordings.

An active participant in developing new pedagogical practices at the University of Connecticut, she has been teaching English literature and composition for ten years at a variety of schools including UCONN, Portland State University, The College of New Rochelle in the South Bronx, CUNY, Eastern Connecticut State University, and Norwalk Community College.

 


  Hissan Elfaki
 

Hissan Elfaki is a chemical engineer who was graduated among the first batch of female chemical engineers from Qatar University in July 2009. She is interested in energy and environment studies and looking forward to be working on research in that field.

 


  Dr. Abdelwahab Aroussi
 

Professor Abdelwahab Aroussi obtained a BSc in Physics from Brighton Polytechnic (UK) in 1981 and a PhD from Trent Polytechnic (UK) in 1988. He simultaneously held the post of lecturer at Trent Polytechnic. In 1991 he joined the University of Nottingham where, in 2005, became head of the School of Mechanical Engineering in the Malaysia Campus. He moved to Leicester University (UK) in 2007 as Professor and Head of ThermoFluids Engineering. 

Professor Aroussi is a chartered engineer and Physicist, a Fellow of the Institutes of Mechanical Engineering and Physics (both UK). He published over 40 Journal and 250 conference papers. He has 26 years research and teaching experience. He supervised over 20 PhDs, examined 28 and acted as external examiner to numerous Universities.

He developed several patented products and technologies, such as the Horizontal Variable Area Rope Breaker [won 2 prestigious RUSHLIGHT AWARDS in 2007] and the single stem endoscopic PIV [commercialized by Olympus]. He pioneered measurement technique and applied these to challenging problems in Engineering and Medicine.

Professor Aroussi acted as consultant to National and multi-national companies including, Rolls-Royce, Alstom, Ford, Visteon, JaguarLandRover, Keymed, Converteam, TechspaceAero, Dunlop and EGZIK. He cofounded GAIM Ltd in 2002 with Greenbank group UK. Fuel management products developed by GAIM are deployed in power stations worldwide. He has generated a research income of over 4 Million Pounds Sterling.

 


  Shahinaz Elaasar
 

Shahinaz Elaasar obtained her M.A. degree from the University of Durham in 1997. While she was still studying, she volunteered to teach Arabic as a Foreign Language at the University of Durham. Since then, Shahinaz worked as an instructor of Arabic as a foreign language at different institutions, such as, Qatar Academy in London and King Fahd Academy amongst others. In September 2009 she joined the School of Oriental and African Studies SOAS at the University of London to obtain certification and training in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language.

Shahinaz’s professional interests include curriculum and syllabus design, development of language skills, and research about the social aspect of women within Arabic Literature. Having travelled to a great number of countries around the world, Shahinaz has been enlightened by these sojourns to many different ideas, cultures and approaches to life.  

 


  Dr. Fodil Fadli
 

Dr. Fodil Fadli is an architect and a researcher in architecture and urban design who has worked in architectural practice, academia and research, mainly in Algeria, France, Tunisia, and the United Kingdom. His research interests span a multitude of topics from sustainable architecture and urban design, sustainability assessment tools and building performance evaluation, to vernacular architecture, urban conservation and the restoration of historic buildings. Dr. Fadli is also interested in cultural heritage, diversity and ethnic spaces in the built environment. His recent research includes working on projects funded by the European Union at the University of Ulster and the AHRC at the University of Liverpool. He has also been teaching architectural students in MA and BA programs (environmental design modules and studio). Prior to this he was involved in architecture consultancy at a private firm in Leeds, UK.

Dr. Fodil has published in well-established international journals, presented numerous papers at conferences in the topics of sustainability, Islamic & Mediterranean traditional architecture, and historic buildings. He has been guest-editor of special issues for the archnet-IJAR journal, a referee and reviewer in conference committees and architectural journals. Dr. Fadli has a passion for ship design and architectural design in dynamic conditions (earthquake architecture). 

 


  Ms. Andwatta Barnes
 

Ms. Andwatta Barnes is a former ESL assessment specialist with ETS. While at ETS, she developed assessments such as the Praxis for teacher licensure and the TOEFL. Ms. Barnes has taught in various settings such as adult ESOL in New Jersey; elementary education in Michigan; K-12 and adult EFL in Japan; and intensive EFL in China. She has extensive experience in creating and utilizing national surveys, conducting workshops for teachers on test item writing, test fairness and sensitivity, bias awareness, standards-based assessment design, and TESOL methodology, and is currently serving as a TESOL/NCATE program reviewer.

Ms. Barnes has a B.A. in Group Social Sciences with an Elementary Education emphasis and an M.Ed. in TESOL from Grand Valley State University. She is currently working on her doctorate in Instructional Leadership and Educational Leadership at Nova Southeastern University.

Ms. Barnes will be visiting Qatar University as a Fellow with the English Literature and Linguistics Department through the English Language Fellow program. Her broad-level scholarly and research interests include ESL teacher professional development and training, instruction and assessment alignment with curricular standards, and teacher effectiveness with respect to core content area instruction for English-language learners. At Qatar University, she is interested in projects involving ESL teacher preparation and follow up evaluations of post-graduate students’ performance as English-language teachers.

 


  Dr. Atif Iqbal
 

Dr. Atif Iqbal is working as Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering, Qatar University, Qatar since August 2010. He received his PhD degree from Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, UK in January 2006. He has obtained his Master and Bachelor degrees (Gold Medal) in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India in 1991 and 1996, respectively. Since 1991, Dr Iqbal has pursued an academic and research career in AMU, LJMU and at Texas A&M University in Qatar.

Dr. Iqbal has published more than 120 research papers in International peer reviewed journals and conferences. He has four patents to his credit. He has supervised two successful PhD students and currently two students are working with him. He has supervised several Master and Bachelor theses. He has completed several large R&D projects and currently supervising three research projects. He is associate editor of International Journal of Electrical & Computer Engineering, SJI, USA and additionally is editorial board member of International Journal of Engineering Science and Technology and IManager Journal of Electrical & Electronics Engineering. He is reviewer of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and Industrial Electronics.

 


  Dr. Mohamed Ahmedna
 

Dr. Mohamed Ahmedna is a Professor and Director of the Center for Excellence in Post-Harvest Technologies at the North Carolina Research Campus, Kannapolis, North Carolina, USA. His research focuses on value-added product development and consumer research, with emphasis on functional foods and human health.

During his tenure at North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&T), Dr. Ahmedna served as Principal Investigator or Co-PI of a multimillion- dollar research portfolio, filed 3 patents, authored/co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts/proceedings, and taught graduate courses. Dr. Ahmedna served on scientific review panels for the USDA, NSF, and DHHS and provided peer-review for 10 scientific journals. Dr. Ahmedna is the recipient of multiple awards of excellence including the 2008 Thurgood Marshall distinguished faculty award, the 2007 NC A&T Outstanding Senior Researcher Award, and the 2005 USAID George Washington Carver Agricultural Excellence Award. He is a member of eleven professional/honorary societies. Prior to joining NCA&T in 2000, Dr. Ahmedna worked as a senior R&D scientist at Technology International Inc., LaPlace, LA.

In 1998, He completed a Ph.D. in Food Science and a M.S. in Applied Statistics at Louisiana State University, USA. He recently earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 


  Dr. Hocine Merabet
 

Dr. Hocine Merabet obtained his PhD and MS in Experimental Atomic Physics and Radiation Physics, respectively, from the University of Caen, France. He started working at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), USA in 1996 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. Then he held a Research Assistant Professor position until 2005 at UNR before joining Dhofar University (DU) in Oman as the chair of the Mathematics and Sciences Department for several years.

Dr. Merabet’s teaching and research experience extend over 17 years. He has published 48 peer reviewed articles in high impact journals and has more than 75 contributed papers in international conferences. In particular, his publications have made a significant impact on the field of ion-atom collisions. He has participated in and led many research projects at UNR and the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA while supervising numerous graduate and undergraduates students. At DU he worked together with the American University of Beirut (AUB) experts and developed curricula of Bachelor of Science (BS) in mathematics, chemistry and physics majors. Dr. Merabet has served on many academic committees. He was a member of the DU University Research Board (URB) under the direction of the President of the university. Due to his international research reputation, the Ministry of High Education in Oman has selected him to be a Grant Committee Member at The Omani National Research Council (TRC), Division of Culture, Social and Basic Sciences.

 


  Dr. Rizwan Ahmad
 

Dr. Rizwan Ahmad received his Master's and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. His earlier degrees include an M.A. and M. Phil. in linguistics from the University of Delhi in India. Dr. Ahmad comes from the American University of Kuwait where he worked as Assistant Professor of English language and literature.

Dr. Ahmad's specialty is sociolinguistics. His main research interests are language ideology, multilingualism, language policy, and sociolinguistics of orthography. He has published research papers in refereed journals on the social and linguistic aspects of scripts and orthography. In addition to English, Dr. Rizwan speaks Urdu, Hindi, and Arabic. He has native-like proficiency in Yemeni dialect. He also has a good command of standard Arabic, in both its written and spoken forms.

 


  Ms. Olga Tkachuk
 

Ms. Olga Tkachuk received her education from the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa in Canada. She studied International Affairs and Development in a globalized context for her MA degree. Her research interests include the geopolitics of the post-Soviet states; social identity and globalization; as well as the developing interplay between religion and politics in the Russian Federation.

Ms. Tkachuk has participated in a number of conferences, and was a member on panels at various organizations that work in conflict zones, such as the Canadian Red Cross, as well as other Canadian NGOs involved in reconstruction efforts in different parts of the world. Olga has experience teaching special interest courses at the University of Ottawa’s department for Continuing Education. She has also taught English as a second language since coming to Qatar.

 


  Dr. Shaligram Pokharel
 

Dr. Shaligram Pokharel got his B.E. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kashmir (Regional Engineering College) with the prestigious Colombo Plan Scholarship. He completed his Masters and PhD in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada with CIDA and NSERC Fellowships. He has also worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow in Waterloo.

Shaligram’s carries experience in systems engineering, industrial engineering with a focus on engineering management. His research areas are in logistics and supply, energy planning and project management. He has published more than 40 international journal papers which are highly cited by the researchers. In addition, he has published more than 23 international conference papers. He has also authored one book, edited two proceedings and written five book chapters. He serves as an editor to four prestigious international journal papers. Prior to joining Qatar University, he was an associate professor of systems and engineering management at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Dr. Shaligram is a global volunteer in project management. He has held board positions (Secretary and Vice President) in Project Management Institute (PMI) Singapore Chapter. He was the global member of Member advisory group of PMI (2007-2009) and currently a Regional Mentor of PMI.

 


  Mr. Michael McKenzie
 

Michael McKenzie hails from Lansing, Michigan (USA). He earned his M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in 2007 from Central Michigan University. In 2004, he received his B.A. in French. Mr. McKenzie has taught English as a Second/Foreign Language at the primary and post secondary levels in the USA, France, and Saudi Arabia. His professional interests include second language writing, discourse analysis, and curriculum design.

 


 Dr. Zaier Aouani
 

Dr. Zaier Aouani received his PhD in Economics from University of Kansas, USA in 2009. He also holds an MSc in Applied Mathematics from University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France, the Proficiency in Teaching Mathematics, and a BSc in Mathematics from University of Tunis, Tunisia.

Prior to joining Qatar University, Dr. Zaier held several academic positions in different parts of the world. He worked as a Lecturer in Mathematics at University of Sousse (Tunisia) and University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris, France), as a Research and Teaching Assistant and then as a Lecturer in Economics at University of Kansas (USA), and more recently as Assistant Professor of Economics at the International School of Economics at TSU (Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia), an elite institution training leaders for academia, the public and private sectors in the entire South Caucasus region.

Dr. Zaier’s research interests cover general equilibrium theory, financial economics, and non-additive measures with applications to decision theory and more broadly to economic theory. His work has been published in Journal of Mathematical Economics and Mathematical Social Sciences. He is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (SAET), the American Economic Association (AEA), and the American Finance Association (AFA).

 


  Dr. Saleh Mubarak
 

Dr. Saleh Mubarak earned a BS (civil engineering - Trine University, Angola, IN, 1981), MS(civil engineering/Structures - Ohio University, 1985), and PhD (civil engineering/Construction Management - Clemson University, 1990).

Dr. Saleh spent 13+ years in the engineering and construction industry, focusing on project scheduling and control, cost estimating, and project management. He worked under private and public employers and as an independent consultant. His academic experience includes: 7+ years as a full-time professor and 6 years as an adjunct professor teaching and creating a variety of courses, updating curricula, student advising, researching, and service. He also conducted continuing education seminars around the world on project scheduling and control, cost estimating, project management, and soft skills. Dr Mubarak has given numerous presentations in professional conferences like PMI-College of Scheduling, PMI, AACEi, Primavera Users Conference. He is an authority on project planning, scheduling, and project control and was chosen as part of the PMI team to write the new Project Scheduling certification exam in 2007.

Dr. Mubarak authored two books: Construction Project Scheduling and Control (2nd edition Wiley, 2010), How to Estimate with Means Data & CostWorks, (3rd Edition 2006) with the 4th edition underway. He is author of many articles, active in a number of professional organizations (mainly PMI, PMI-COS, and AACEi). Dr. Mubarak is a public speaker and writer in both Arabic and English on a variety of topics, mostly social issues. and is an advocate of holistic healthy living.

 


  Ms. Simone Popperl
 

Ms. Simone Popperl graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (B.S.F.S) with a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies. Her original research has focused on culturally-mediated expressions of identity in the Gaza Strip and the ramifications of these on Palestinian civil society.

Ms. Simone has lived and worked in France, Egypt, and Israel and the Palestinian Territories and participated in research projects related to gender and development in Cairo and the political economy of the Gulf oil monarchies. She speaks fluent French and completed the Advanced I level of the Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Program at Qatar University in the Spring 2010.

 


  Ms. Katia Medawar
 

Ms. Katia Medawar graduated from the University of Wales Aberystwyth, UK with a Master in Librarianship MLIB since 1994, and worked as a Research Assistant for the Center for Information Quality Management. After two years spent in the UK, she was appointed as Automation Librarian at the American University of Beirut until 2002, where she moved to Paris to work as a pre-sale consultant for a Software designer for Libraries and Documentation centers. She then worked at Institut Pasteur Library as Portal Administrator until 2006. For the last four years, till August 2010 she headed the Access Services Department at the American University of Beirut Jafet Library entailing Circulation, Reserve, Inter Library Loan, Document Delivery Services, Stacks Management, Reproduction and External memberships. She is the Head of Public Services at QU Library.

Katia is a member of the Lebanese Library Association and L'Association des Professionnels de l'Information et de la Documentation (ADBS) in Paris . She published several articles and case studies related to her former jobs. She participated in several projects in Lebanon for promoting librarianship and in the preparation of several conferences organized by the LLA.

 


  Mr. Nasser Al Jurf
 

Mr. Nasser Al Jurf obtained his M.S. in Engineering Systems Management with Construction Management Concentration from American University of Sharjah at Sharjah, UAE in May 2007, and completed B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with Planning and Scheduling Concentration at University of Qatar in Doha, Qatar in February 2004.

Mr. Al Jurf worked as Project and Planning Engineering with construction consultant office and joined University of Qatar as Teaching Assistant at College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering in Fall 2010. He attended the Second International Conference in Engineering Systems Management and Applications 2010 (ICESMA 2010), which was held at American University of Sharjah on 30 March 2010, and participated on a paper about Qatar Residential Construction Projects and is working on its publication.

 


  Dr. Fuad Rakhman
 

Dr. Fuad Rakhman earned his B.Sc. in Accounting from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia in 1999. He received his Masters degree in Accounting in 2003 and his Ph.D. in Accounting in 2009, both from Oklahoma State University, USA.

Dr. Rakhman was a Graduate Teaching Associate from 2003 to 2008 at the School of Accounting, OSU. He joined Purdue University Calumet, Indiana, USA from 2008 to 2010 as an Assistant Professor. As of Fall 2010, he is with Qatar University as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Rakhman’s primary research interest is capital market research in accounting. He is a member of the American Accounting Association.

 


  Dr. Irene Theodoropoulou
 

Dr. Irene Theodoropoulou joined QU as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociolinguistics in fall 2010 and as Assistant Professor in Spring 2011. A native Greek from Athens, she completed her PhD in Sociolinguistics at King’s College London in April 2010. Prior to that, she obtained an MPhil. in English & Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge and a BA (summa cum laude) in Greek Philology from the University of Athens. She also spent one year at the University of Vienna studying theoretical, applied and historical linguistics, while her attendance at numerous summer schools and institutes in both Europe and the U.S. has significantly contributed towards her command of sociolinguistics.

Dr. Theodoropoulou’s research interests lie in the fields of sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and rhetoric. Of particular interest are issues pertaining to the ways speech and life styles construct people’s social identities, a relationship which she hopes to investigate in Qatar during her stay. She has received numerous scholarships, grants and awards from prestigious funding institutions in Greece, including the Greek State Scholarships Foundation and the Onassis Foundation. Her publications include a co-edited volume, single-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, conference proceedings and book reviews. Her hobbies include sports, music, travelling and learning about new cultures.

 


  Ms Wendy Collins
 

Ms Wendy Collins completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia where she majored in Japanese Language and English and Asian Linguistics. She then took a teaching position in Japan staying there for two years. Following this, Wendy moved to England, where she completed the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) before returning to Australia.

In Australia Ms Collins worked at a private English language college for several years before being offered a position at Griffith University to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP and Pre-EAP). In addition, she was involved in developing and delivering a language course for Overseas Trained Doctors; teaching Aviation English to the United Arab Emirates Military Cadets; and developing materials for training pilots and air traffic controllers from non-English speaking backgrounds.

In August 2006, Wendy moved to the United Arab Emirates where she worked in the Abu Dhabi Education Council’s school reform project as an ESL Trainer. Ms. Wendy recently completed her Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) through Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

 


  Dr. Majida Mehana 
 

Dr. Majida Mehana received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from The Pennsylvania State University with a major in Early Childhood Education and minors in Statistics and in Human Development and Family Studies.

Dr. Majida engaged in teaching assignments at the Lebanese University, United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Arab Open University-Lebanon, and Sultan Qaboos University where she taught early childhood education, curriculum and instruction, children’s literature, and statistics courses to students of diverse backgrounds. She developed the Early Childhood Education program at UAEU according to NCATE standards. She also acted as an educational consultant providing training on teacher education and development.

 


  Dr. Annamaria Petrioli-Tofani
 

Dr. Annamaria Petrioli-Tofani graduated in History of Art from the University of Florence. She entered the administration of Italian Artistic Patrimony in 1967; in 1981 was appointed Director of the Uffizi Prints and Drawings Department and in 1987 general Director of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. In 1997 she was the Kennedy Professor at the Smith College (Northampton, Mass., U.S.A.) and in 2005-6 the Kress Professor at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC).

Dr. Annamaria is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (Russia). She has been responsible of several major temporary exhibitions in Europe, U.S.A., Japan, and Australia. Dr. Petrioli-Tofani is author of many scientific publications and books on Museology and Italian Art.

 


 

 Dr. Mohammed Amezzian
 

Dr. Mohammed Amezzian earned his PhD and BA (Islamic Studies) from the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at the University of Mohamed I, Oujda (Morocco) in 2000 and 1984 respectively. For his MA (Islamic Philosophy), Dr. Amezzian studied at the Islamic Philosophy Department, College of Dar Al Ulum, University of Cairo (Egypt) in 1988.

Dr. Mohammed's teaching experience includes work at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, UAE (2005- 2010) and University of Mohamed I, Oujda, Morocco (1989-2005).

Dr. Amezzian is Editor in Chief of Al-Mun'ataf Journal, a quarterly intellectual and cultural publication, Oujda/Morocco. He is also an Administrative Board Member and Founding Member: Al-Hikma Forum for Arab Thinkers and Researchers, (Morocco).

 


  Dr. Fatima Mraiche
 

Dr. Fatima Mraiche received her BSc. in Pharmacology with distinction at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). After completing her BSc in 2004, Dr. Mraiche pursued a PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Alberta. She graduated in 2010, receiving numerous national and provincial scholarships, including the Canadian Institute of Health Research Frederick Banting and Charles Best Doctoral Scholarship, Heart and Stroke Foundation Doctoral Scholarship and the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Doctoral Scholarship.

Dr. Mraiche specializes in Cardiovascular Research and has extensive training in molecular biology, creation, maintenance and use of transgenic animals and adenoviruses, all highly specialized biomedical techniques. She is also highly skilled in heart perfusions, as well as performing animal surgery.

Dr. Mraiche received two teaching certificates, one from the University of Alberta Teaching Services and the second from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. She has also been trained and certified in problem-based learning, which involves facilitated group discussions. She has published three first author papers and three second author papers in international peer reviewed journals. She has presented and published over 25 abstracts at international and national scientific conferences.

 


 

 Mr. Mohammad Sabbagh 
 

Mr. Mohammad Sabbagh holds a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. His diversified educational background has offered him the opportunity to occupy interrelated positions in both IT and Business fields.

In Beirut, Mr. Mohammad has worked in the programming and development of .NET software applications with Oracle and SQL database backend. He held a position as a “.NET Developer”, in which he was responsible for designing, coding, and testing the developed programs and web application solutions.

In Dubai, Mr. Sabbagh was employed as a Team Leader in Strategy and Performance Excellence. There he had been responsible for the implementation and automation of strategy plans and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). He is an expert in the implementation of the BSC using Performance Management Solutions based on .NET technology which enables managers to keep track of the execution of activities by staff under their supervision.

 


   Dr. Ahmed Awaisu 
 

Dr. Ahmed Awaisu   obtained his masters and Ph.D degrees in clinical pharmacy from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He has over 10 years working experience as a pharmacist and over 6 years of teaching and research experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy programs.  

He has undertaken numerous research studies independently and in collaboration with colleagues in the areas of clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice, clinical and outcome research, and pharmacy education. He has published nearly 40 papers in reputable peer-reviewed journals internationally. Dr. Awaisu has particular interest to clinical and outcomes research; pharmacoepidemiology and medication use safety; health promotion and disease prevention including smoking cessation and tobacco control; and pharmaceutical education. 

His experience also spans to curriculum design and implementation in pharmacy education. For instance, he was the architect to introduce Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as a gold-standard for the evaluation of the clinical competence of pharmacy students in Malaysia.

     


   Ms. Farah Shooshtarian 
 

Ms. Farah Shooshtarian joins Qatar University as Teaching Assistant /Administrative Coordinator. She has over 15 years experience as a technical lead, senior system analyst and database designer. Farah worked for a wide array of international companies including United Parcel Service, Northrop Grumman, TEPPCO, and Universal Weather and Aviation. She has also served as an Oracle Functional consultant and to retail companies.

Ms. Farah developed several large scale systems using Oracle 8i/9i/10g, Oracle Reports. Oracle Forms 6i/10g, Oracle Financial, Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) tools among others. Farah is a Oracle Certified Applications Developer and Oracle Application DBA. Ms. Shooshtarian received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer science from State University of New York and University of Louisville, respectively.

 


   Mr. Sam Meekings  
 

Mr. Sam Meekings was educated at Oxford University and the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of 'Under Fishbone Clouds', a novel about contemporary China that has been published in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil. Mr. Meekings is also the author of the new novel 'The Book of Crows', and a volume of poetry entitled 'The Bestiary'.

Sam lived and worked, as a teacher and an editor for Oxford University Press, in China for many years, and his research interests include Tang Dynasty Chinese poetry and Creative Writing.
