QU organizes ‘This is Public Health: Mental Health Festival’

2019-11-17

To promote mental health and wellbeing, The Department of Public Health at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) in Qatar University (QU) organized a three-day event ‘This is Public Health: Mental Health Festival,’ which featured a variety of activities.

As a kick-off to the festival, QU public health students organized and managed an engaging and interactive booth. Students participated in various activities that promoted mental health and wellbeing such as trivia and positive body-image games.

Public health student Usra ElSheikh commented on the event saying, “I am glad that we helped students learn to love their bodies, increase their self-esteem and helped them to distress and enjoy themselves.”

On the second day of the event, public health alumni working in Sidra, Droobi Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Cancer Society, Communicable Disease Center, and the Ministry of Public Health delivered a session for current students on the field of public health and the role of public health specialists in different settings. The session allowed the alumni to connect with the students and share their experiences post-graduation and covered research, quality review, health education, promotions and digital innovations.

The final day of the Mental Health Festival featured a clay-pottery workshop organized by the Funoon Club at QU.

Established in 2012, CHS’s Department of Public Health is the first of its kind in Qatar. Through active research agendas and community outreach efforts, its team of experienced faculty members work together in a student-centered environment while contributing to the broader public health landscape in the country and internationally. The department offers both bachelor and master degrees in public health.
