The Human Nutrition Department at the College of Health Sciences, member of the QU-HEALTH at Qatar University, has organized a campaign at the Sheraton Hotel on the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active.

Obesity can lead to many chronic diseases and health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Therefore, being physically active helps in maintaining a healthy weight, preventing chronic diseases and boosting self-esteem, mood and sleep quality.

Body weight can be assessed using several methods such as the Body Mass Index, checking the body fat percentage, measuring the waist circumference and calculating the waist to hip ratio. A healthy weight is defined as an appropriate weight in relation to height. If the BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, it falls within the normal or Healthy Weight range. Third year students of Human Nutrition shared with the audience several strategies to maintain a healthy weight.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment that promotes reduced amounts of habitual physical activity due to quarantine requirements, fear of being infected and reduced opportunities to remain physically active.

Sustained physical inactivity can lead to many health problems and poor physical and mental health. In fact, physical activity has many health benefits such as reducing the risk of heart attack, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Regular physical activity helps in maintaining a healthy weight, maintains strength and flexibility, improve mental health and relieve stress. Physical activity is one of the components of the Qatar Dietary Guidelines. Adults should do moderate intensity physical activity at least 5 days per week (for at least 30 minutes) and/or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity at least 3 days per week (for at least 20 minutes). Students shared tips to increase physical activity level, how to include it in daily life and meet recommendations.

The campaign included a presentation and many activities. A range of learning activities were provided through which participants assessed their current weight, reflected on their physical activity level and listed the benefits and strategies to increase their physical activity level.
