Part of the college’s Distinguished Speakers Series

As part of its Distinguished Speakers Series, CENG hosted on November 22 a lecture by H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Chairman of the Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Foundation for Energy & Sustainable Development and Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry.

Themed “Ras Laffan, from Idea… to Reality”, the lecture is part of CENG’s initiative to host Qatari speakers who made great achievements in the field of business and industry, while contributing to Qatar’s development and individuals’ lives.

Attendees included QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, CENG Dean Dr Khalifa Al-Khalifa, and Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) Chief Human Capital Officer Eng Abdulla Ahmad Naji, as well as QU leadership, faculty, staff and students.

Dr Hassan Al Derham thanked H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah for providing an overview of Ras Laffan since its beginning under the vision of the Father Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah noted that gas has been discovered in the early seventies and that Ras Laffan City was considered as the largest and unique gas field in the world because of the lack of interest in the gas project exploration at that time. He also noted that the gas project exploration was stopped because of the oil boom that occurred in the 1970s and early 1980s when liquefied natural gas (LNG) was only known on a small scale in Japan and South Korea.

He said: “After the drop in oil prices since 1984, the gas project exploration was launched again at a critical time and was supported by the Father Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.”

H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah pointed to the negotiations with Japan to import Qatari gas. He said: “The gas shipment started to reach different countries across the world, which added to Qatar’s achievements in oil and gas, positioning the country as one of the world’s largest exporter of gas.”

Dr Khalifa Al-Khalifa said: “Through its Distinguished Speakers Series, CENG is connecting students and community members with Qatar’s top speakers who made huge changes and who contributed to Qatar’s progress and development in various fields. This event addresses youth and students who will become tomorrow’s leaders and make best use of resources towards excellence and success in their future careers.”
