The Environment and Sustainability section at the Facilities and General Services Department at Qatar University (QU) marked Earth Hour to spread awareness about environment protection and climate change.
The department organized an event to mark Earth Hour, the aim of this event was to encourage community members and institutions to turn off all unnecessary lights and electronic devices for one hour (8:30 PM - 9:30 PM), as an initiative to reduce the electrical consumption.
Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment.
Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, switching off their lights to show support for our planet.
Madawi Al Shafi, Section Head of the Environment and Sustainability section at the Facilities and General Services Department at QU said “We had the chance to participate in the Earth Hour event two years ago at Qatar University, and last year during the pandemic people were able to conserve energy and save the environment in a way or another.”
“We wanted to participate this year in the Earth Hour event, but due to the current situation of Covid-19 in the country we decided to have it through social media platforms only, thus we distributed glow bracelets to Qatar University community to get them involved in the event. We were pleased by the number of students posting very creative photos and videos of their participation.” Al Shafi adds.
Madawi adds that the event took place on Thursday, March 25, 2021, and we turned off the lights of some of the campus buildings even the Higher Administration Building, to emphasize the importance of conserving energy, and preserving the environmental resources, the Media Team covered the event through Qatar University’s social media platforms especially through Snapchat and Instagram.
