Qatar University organizes 9th Arabic Language Day Celebration under the title "Language and Modern Technologies"

Qatar University (QU) honored His Excellency Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister of State, on the 9th Arabic Language Day organized by the Department of Arabic Language at Qatar University, under the theme "Arabic Language and Modern Technologies". This annual event celebrated the anniversary of the day in which the United Nations General Assembly adopted in 1973 the decision to introduce the Arabic language into the list of official languages of the United Nations.
Presented during the event were, Dr Hassan Al Derham, President of Qatar University, Dr Hamda Hassan Al-Sulaiti, Secretary-General of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Dr Rashid Ahmed Al-Kuwari, Dean of QU’s College of Arts and Sciences and Dr Maryam Al-Naemi, Head of Arabic Language Department at QU.
The event showcased a number of different activities presented by the students of the Arabic Language Department, which included the opening operetta, “Shomus Al Ola”. The operetta was written by Dr Maryam Al-Naemi, composed by Dr Mahmoud Kaheel, Assistant Professor at the Arabic Language Department and performed by the students; Mohammed Al-Abrash, Nesreen Salama and Rima Yaseen. The event also included, among many other activities, an art exhibition that highlighted the work of a number of students, who expressed their thoughts on Qatar’s prosperity and victories.
In his speech, HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister of State, said: “The importance of the Arabic Language lays in its vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of the Arabic and Islamic nations. The Arabic Language has been a lively and vibrant language for centuries as hundreds of thousands of books and manuscripts have been written with it, in various fields. It is of great importance to strengthen the status of Arabic as a language of science, knowledge, innovation and artistic and cultural creativity by investing in scientific research and development.”
Dr Hassan Al Derham, President of Qatar University, said: “We’re in a dire need to carve the pathway to enable the Arabic Language. You may all witness what our country is trying to achieve in modernizing the Arabic language and connecting it to the technological fields. This subject will be tackled in the conference, "Computer Linguistics and Automated Processing of the Arabic Language", to be held in mid-March 2018.”
