CSIS hosted on October 23 an event to launch the “Qatar Global Award for Dialogue Among Civilizations”, as part of its collaboration with Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations.

The award is an initiative of Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations and under supervision of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Chair in Alliance of Civilizations at CSIS. It aligns with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 to support dialogue among civilizations and promote coexistence between different religions and cultures.

Attending the event were QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vice President of Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations H.E. Dr Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi, and CSIS Dean Dr Yousuf Al-Siddiqi, as well as QU officials, faculty and staff.

The award will be presented to the best research project and covers each year a specific topic. This year’s theme is “The concept and consolidation of dialogue among civilizations”. It includes many pillars such as “The concept, philosophy and dimensions of dialogue”, “The Qur’anic dialogue system and its implications on reality”, “The problematic of civilizational dialogue and communication”, “The process of civilizational dialogue and its prospects and constraints”, and “The role of organizations, universities, civil society and media in the dialogue among and alliance of civilizations”.

The winners will be announced during the Doha Forum, which will be held in May 2018. The first winner will receive QR80,000, while QR45,000 and QR25,000 will be awarded to the second and third winners.

In his remarks, Dr Hassan Al Derham said: “We are pleased to launch the "Qatar Global Award for Dialogue Among Civilizations". This award comes as a result of the collaboration between the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University and Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations. It also highlights Qatar’s commitment to be a model of dialogue among civilizations, religions and cultures. Through its collaboration with Qatar Committee for Alliance and Civilizations, CSIS showcases its ongoing efforts to build solid relations with the various institutions within the society.”

H.E. Dr Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi said: “I would like to thank Qatar University for hosting this event to launch the "Qatar Global Award for Dialogue Among Civilizations". Founded in 2010, the Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations established the Qatar’s Plan for the Alliance of Civilizations (2014-2016) based on the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. The country’s national vision attached great importance to the sponsorship and support of dialogue among civilizations while promoting coexistence between different religions and cultures. The Qatar’s Plan for the Alliance of Civilizations includes various programs and activities aiming at ensuring the alliance of civilizations in fours fields -- education, youth, immigration and media. We hope that this award will contribute to spreading the culture of dialogue through research and studies from all over the world. We look forward to further collaborations with Qatar University with the aim to implement more projects and activities, which will contribute to strengthening the role of Qatar as a main sponsor of the United Nations’ initiative to drive the alliance of civilizations at the international and regional level.”

Dr Yousuf Al-Siddiqi said: “I would like to thank Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations for contributing to the launch of this award. CSIS continues in its efforts to fulfill the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and meet the needs of society. In this context, the College proposed the elective course “Alliance of Civilizations”. However, we strive to make this course obligatory and to launch the Master’s and PhD programs in dialogue among civilizations.”
