Over 1500 alumni and their friends and relatives gathered on April 4 at the Library courtyard for the 2016 Alumni Reunion. In its 8th installment, the event aimed to reconnect graduates with their alma mater, and to encourage mutual support and interaction between the institution and its graduates.

Organized by QU Alumni Association (QUAA), the annual gathering is an opportunity to bring together friends, faculty and QU leaders to re-energize the spirit of pride, friendship, and loyalty and to remind alumni of their lasting connection with their alma mater.

Attendees included QU president Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham, members of QU leadership and college deans, QUAA president Dr Saif Al Hajri, Alumni and Partner Relations manager Rana Al Falasi, and QU alumni Trade and Industry Department director at the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf Dr Hilal Almukhaini (class of 1983) and Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait Strategic Alliance & Other Fess Income Department head Mr Khaled Farooq Sabri Al Khatib (class of 1983), as well as several QUAA members.

The program featured a short film screening on the Association, entertainment activities by Embrace Doha, and live performances including poetry recitations by well-renowned Qatari poet Hamad Al Daiya. Also on the program was a kids’ zone organized and supervised by QU Early Childhood Center with activities for children that included a puppet show, career role playing, handicraft and painting.

Awards were presented to Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer bin Mohammed Al Thani (Class of 1987) for Distinguished Alumni, College of Pharmacy Chapter for Distinguished Chapter, and CAS student Fatima Alsheeb for the Design Competition Alumnus & Alumna Category. Mohamad Alhasel won 1st place in the Photography Competition, while student Farah Dawwas and student Abdelaziz Issa won 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Commenting on the event, Dr Al Derham noted that since its inception in 1973, QU is committed to graduating highly-qualified individuals to join leadership ranks in the labor market, and actively contribute to Qatar’s growth and development. “The university is today home to 9 colleges, 17000 students and more than 62 academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our mission is to ensure that we keep abreast of the society’s fast growth by developing new programs, promoting research, and contributing to providing solutions to problems within the society. This can be realized through a strong collaboration between the university and its alumni”, he said, adding, “In this context, the QU Alumni Reunion is an interactive forum that reconnects graduates with their alma mater and offers them the opportunity to share ideas and knowledge and to plan for a successful future.”

Dr Al Hajri said: “This annual gathering highlights the pride, loyalty and sense of belonging the alumni feel towards the university from which they graduated. It also strengthens the links between QU alumni and their alma mater, and highlights the alumni’s role as distinguished ambassadors of the organization within the community.”

Ms Al Falasi said: “This event is an important opportunity to establish links between alumni, and create an enriching environment of networking which will encourage a mutual support and interaction between the university and its graduates.”

Dr Almukhaini said: “I would like to thank Qatar University for giving us the opportunity to meet again with our colleagues and friends. We are encouraged that this annual gathering continues to strengthen our links with our alma mater.”

Mr Al Khatib said: “Qatar University gives us the basic fundamentals in life which are to have strong faith, take responsibility, be proactive and a good leader, and become lifelong learners.”
