QU Celebrates CAS Accreditation Success
2012-06-27
QU is celebrating the achievement of international accreditation for its undergraduate and Master’s programs in Environmental Science in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences within the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS).

The College has offered a BSc in Environmental Science since September 2008.  Its MSc program enrolled its first students in Fall 2011.

The university is the first in the Middle East to be accredited by both the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES) and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) UK, further cementing its position as an institution of academic excellence internationally.

The award is the culmination of 15 months of hard work for the Department which began the process in March 2011.  Although, as a rule, CHES accredits only honors and graduate programs, an exception was made for QU’s BSc Environmental Science course because of its rigorous nature, which puts it at the same level as an honors program in other universities.

Head of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr Hamda Abdulla Al-Naemi, said:  “We are delighted to be recognised as a regional leader, being the only department in the Middle East offering internationally recognised and professionally accredited programs in Environmental Science.

“This achievement is the result of a long process of hard work, characterized by the desire to engender in our young generation an appreciation of the importance of our fragile environment.  By giving them the necessary tools – capability, confidence, a caring attitude and ensuring they are well educated – we hope they will take on the responsibility of looking after our environment for future generations.

“The accreditation success is dedicated to the QU President for her continuous support, to the CAS Dean, department faculty, staff and students and to every human who cares and contributes in the protection of the environment.”

CAS Dean Dr Eiman Mustafawi said: “As a college, we are very honored to be the only educational institution, not only in Qatar, but in the region that has both our undergraduate and postgraduate environmental science programs accredited by CHES and IES.

“Being able to offer our students these internationally-recognized programs is in line with our vision of becoming a model national university.  Our programs have always been equipped with high-caliber staff, world-class facilities and equipment and most importantly, passionate students who are determined to become the region’s environmental  leaders of tomorrow, and I am confident that they will be.”

CHES was founded in 1991 and is the collective voice of the UK Environmental Sciences academic community. It is an active networking organization for all those involved in environmental programs within UK higher and further education and facilitates cooperation and collaboration between relevant bodies within the UK and internationally.

It works closely with the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and also has links with similar organizations in North America and across Europe. There are currently 33 university departments making up the membership of CHES. The accreditation scheme covers 50 individual degree programs across 18 members.
