Two New Master's Programs at College of Sharia and Islamic Studies
2012-07-18
College of Sharia and Islamic Studies (CSIS) recently unveiled its two new Masters’ programs - Quranic Sciences and Tasfeer, and Fiqh and Usul Al Fiqh -- in a press briefing conducted by CSIS dean Dr Aisha Al-Mannai  in which she outlined details of the programs and their role in contributing to the country’s development.

The two-year programs, which will begin in Fall this year, are the first of their kind in Qatar.  They are designed to produce a cadre of specialists in Quranic research, analysis and interpretation of religious texts, Islamic jurisprudence and its origins, sources and principles.

Graduates of the programs will contribute to uplifting Islam and Islamic doctrine in line with the country’s objectives and values stated in Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar National Development Strategy 2011-2016.   They will be equipped with the necessary skills to work across a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations, particularly in the fields of teaching, research and media.

Prospective students are encouraged to apply online before August 26.
For both courses, the focus will be on interactive learning, using the latest technology. The Master’s of Fiqh and Usul al Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence and the study of its origins and principles) will link theoretical issues to their practical applications, allowing students to apply basic Islamic principles of tolerance, diversity and openness to issues in contemporary life.  Students  will be trained to compare the Islamic legal system with contemporary legal systems and enable them to propose appropriate solutions to family issues as well as judicial, economic and legal problems.

The Master’s of Qu’aranic Sciences and Tafseer (Exegeses) will focus on interpretation of the Qu’ran with its various doctrines.

Dr Al-Mannai said: “This is such an important milestone in the 37-year history of the College and I am delighted that we have finally launched our first two Masters programs.   They are unique in Qatar and we hope that in time, they will rank among the best in the region. We hope they will widen and enhance the research base of Islamic Studies not only in Qatar but across the Gulf.”

The briefing was also an opportunity for Dr Al-Mannai to announce the appointment of Prof Abdul Hakim Al-Khulaifi as the new Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the College.   Dr Al-Khulaifi, a QU alumni and graduate of Manchester University, UK, will take up his post in late August.
