Qatar University is an internationally acclaimed university and takes its responsibilities for the humane care of animals seriously, therefore the Policies and Procedures of Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) have been written to standards based on the best practices in either the: QU-Handbook for Research Ethical Rules and Regulations
Ministry of Health (MOH) Policies, Regulations and Guidelines for Research Involving Laboratory Animals, 2013 (SCH Policies)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH): Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8th edition (The Guide).
It is our intention to implement a comprehensive animal care and use program with the ultimate aim of having Qatar University's animal care and use program accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). This process provides continuing voluntary peer review of Qatar University’s program by internationally recognized experts. These Policy and Procedures are designed to promote and sustain a safe and high-quality LARC that supports the University’s research mission and ensures the humane care and use of laboratory animals in accordance with MOH requirements and the standards of Qatar University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The Policy and Procedures have been developed to ensure the growth and success of a comprehensive and internationally recognized Animal Husbandry and Care program at Qatar University. Furthermore, Qatar University is committed to providing its research community with a safe, clean and efficient LARC.
All personnel involved in animal research or animal care at Qatar University are expected to become familiar with and follow the Work Instructions set forth in the LARC's Policy and Procedures, the MOH Policies and the Guide.
Therefore failure to follow the Policy and Procedures may result in unsafe or unhealthy conditions for animals and/or personnel as well as the violation of Qatar University's and/or MOH's regulations.
