LARC provides quality animal care through high quality housing, care in restricted controlled environment that promotes the quality of life of the animals and minimizes variations that can modify animals’ response to experimentation.

LARC animal care and use program is duly approved by QU-IACUC, Qatar University and the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), Qatar. We believe that excellence in research and teaching requires excellence in our animal care and use program.

Responsibilities and Service Provided by LARC

    • Provide facilities for housing laboratory animals (Rat&Mice) at present.
    • Training programs(HCULA)
    • Animal/Feed/Bedding procurement
    • Provide daily animal husbandry
    • Colony health surveillance- Sentinels Program
    • Institutional compliance with animal welfare regulations, standards and policies
    • Veterinary  support

    Caging

Rodents are housed in individually ventilated caging (IVC) systems equipped with automatic watering system. The animals experimental manipulations should be performed under HEPA filtered laminar flow hoods or BS 60 bio safety- cabinets.  All the animal holding room and procedure rooms are equipped with BS 60 bio-safety cabinets.

    Social Housing

Every effort is made to house rodents in compatible groups unless it is in conflict with the scientific goals of the approved IACUC protocol. This allows for mutual grooming and other social interactions among cage mates. In addition, species-specific environmental enrichment is provided which allows the animals to express normal behavior such as digging, burrowing and gnawing.

    Animal Identity

Every animal’s cages are identified via the use of different cage cards, depend upon the activity i.e. experiment, quarantine, breeding, and sick animals. The cage cards containing the following information:

    • Name of the Principal Investigator,
    • IACUC Protocol Number,
    • Date animals were received,
    • Animal species
    • Number of animals initially placed in the cage
    • Any other pertinent information.

The Principal Investigator identifies individual animals within a cage as long as such marking is consistent with methods approved in The Guide.
Individuals performing procedures or injections on rodents should note the details and date of such manipulations on the card. This assists the Attending Veterinarian and LARC Personnel in performing their rounds.

    Environmental Parameters

Standard environmental parameters in LARC are maintained as follows, unless otherwise allowed under an IACUC-approved protocol.

Temperature & Humidity – All the animal holding rooms are kept at 19ºC to 23ºC and
the relative humidity levels for   indoor animal   rooms should be at 30% to 70%. Room temperature and relative humidity is monitored and recorded daily by LARC staff.

    Noise
     – All the animal holding room maintained Noise levels less than 82 db.

    Photo-period & Lighting
Light cycles within the animal rooms are by a time lighting system to maintain standard light/dark cycles are 12 dark/ 12 light. The light intensity is maintained 350-400 lux units. If any experiment/project needs different light /dark cycle, the PI must submit specific IACUC approval to facility manager.

Ventilation- LARC maintains 14 time fresh air change/hr in all the animal  rooms.
