Qatar University (QU) is continually working on empowering its students and encouraging them to be actively involved in the campus life through a variety of co-curricular activities and eventsthat support their academic experience, hence enriching their practical experience opportunities and refining their personal development. To attain this goal, the Student Affairs Sector at QU has initiated and established three categories of Non-Academic Annual Student Awards to honor and acknowledgestudents whodemonstrated exceptional and distinguished contributions to QU campus life namely: student activities, athletics, and services.
These awards are: the Student Leadership Award which is presented to a male and a female student who demonstrated distinguished skills and outstanding leadership in student activities and/or student organizations. Second, the Student Services Award which is presented to three males and three females students who have exhibited outstanding achievements in the student activities, student services, as well as community service. Finally, the Student Athletic Award which is granted to a male and a female student who have demonstrated and rolled out a spectacular and a distinguished work in the field of sports activities.
The first version of the awards had been established in the academic year 2007-2008 and awards were granted to six students who won the Student Leadership and the Student Services Awards, whereas the Student Athletic Award had been withheld since the candidates did not meet the expected standards and requirements. In 2008/2009, the number of candidates for the awards increased to more than 20 students, five female and five male students won the three categories of the Non-Academic Student Awards, and in 2009/2010 four female and five male students won the awards. The number of candidates increased to 66 participants, with around 600 nominators of faculty, staff and students.
