October 16, 2011Preceptor Workshop

The first mandatory preceptor workshop titled “The Art & Science of Supervising Students” for the second SPEP cycle has been scheduled for November 23, 2011 from 1700-2000 hours and repeated again on November 28, 2011 from 1700-2000 hours at Qatar University College of Pharmacy. The purpose of this workshop is to train preceptors to teach pharmacy students in a practice setting. All preceptors are expected to attend one of the scheduled sessions.

October 13, 2011SPEP Advisory Committee Meeting

Site Coordinators from hospital, community, and clinic pharmacy SPEP sites were invited to participate in the fourth biannual SPEP Advisory Committee Meeting. This meeting was held at Qatar University College of Pharmacy on October 13, 2011. The purpose of the meeting was for committee members to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of the SPEP program. The third cycle of the SPEP-1 and second cycle of SPEP-2 rotations were considered by the members to be successful and has been a valuable experience for students, preceptors and coordinators alike.

Well Care Group Signs Clinical Training Agreement

Well Care Group has signed a clinical training agreement with QU College of Pharmacy and will be affiliated as a partner in the experiential training of our pharmacy students. The clinical training agreement was signed by Sheikh Ali Abdullah Al Thani, owner of the Well Care Group, and Dr. Peter Jewesson, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, on Tuesday March 15th, 2011. The Well Care pharmacies that will be involved in the upcoming SPEP rotations starting June 2011 include Arafa Pharmacy, Mina Pharmacy, Meeqat Pharmacy and Al Hijrah Pharmacy.

First Annual SPEP Preceptor Appreciation Event

The College of Pharmacy held its first SPEP Preceptor Appreciation Event to honor the directors, site coordinators and preceptors involved in the Structured Practical Experiences in Pharmacy (SPEP) program. The event was held on February 16, 2011 at the Intercontinental Hotel where over 80 preceptors, site coordinators and pharmacy directors were recognized with certificates and plaques, and a complementary pharmacy reference text. Our partners in attendance included the Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care, Qatar Petroleum, International Medical Corporation, Boots and Ebn Sina Medical. Thank you again to all of our partners for your time and commitment in the completion of over 110 4-week internships for the first SPEP cycle.

Completion of the First SPEP Cycle

Eighteen fourth year professional students have successful completed 960 hours of structured, practical experiential training in the hospital, community, and clinic pharmacy setting in Qatar. This first class of pharmacy students began their practical training on June 14, 2009 with completion of the 6 required SPEP rotations on January 20, 2011. This is a first for the College of Pharmacy and for Qatar. Congratulations Pharmacy Class of 2011.

Second Annual SPEP Advisory Committee Meeting

Site Coordinators from hospital, community, and clinic pharmacy SPEP sites were invited to participate in the second annual SPEP Advisory Committee Meeting. This meeting was held at Qatar University College of Pharmacy on October 7, 2010. The purpose of the meeting was for committee members to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of the SPEP program. Launch of the First SPEP-3 to SPEP-6 Rotations

The first set of 4 SPEP rotations for the fourth-professional year pharmacy students commenced on September 19, 2010 and will conclude on January 20, 2011. Eighteen fourth-year pharmacy students will be placed in one of the 21 SPEP training sites to complete four 4 week rotations (SPEP-3 to SPEP-6). At the completion of these rotations, these pharmacy students will have completed 960 hours of structured experiential training in a hospital, community, and clinic pharmacy settings.

Summer SPEP-1 & SPEP-2 Rotations

Thirty-two second and third year pharmacy students commenced their summer SPEP rotations on June 20, 2010 to July 15, 2010. This was the second cycle for the SPEP-1 rotations and the first cycle for the SPEP-2 rotations. The HMC health centers and Qatar Petroleum clinic pharmacy sites, Ebn Sina community pharmacy sites, and Al Khor and Rumailah hospital pharmacy sites were new additions to this round of SPEP rotations.

Qatar Petroleum Signs Clinical Training Agreement

Qatar Petroleum has signed a clinical training agreement with QU College of Pharmacy and will be affiliated as a partner in the experiential training of our pharmacy students. The Qatar Petroleum clinic pharmacy located in Doha has been approved as a clinical training site and will be involved in the upcoming SPEP rotations starting June 2010.

Preceptors are expected to attend one the scheduled sessions. The purpose of this workshop is to prepare preceptors for the upcoming SPEP-1 to SPEP-6 rotations.

Al Khor Hospital Becomes an Approved SPEP Site

Al Khor hospital pharmacy joins the other HMC hospital pharmacies to become another approved hospital clinical training site for QU pharmacy students. Al Khor pharmacy will participate in the upcoming summer SPEP rotations starting June 20, 2010.

Rumaila hospital pharmacy joins the other HMC hospital pharmacies to become an approved hospital clinical training site for QU pharmacy students. Rumaila pharmacy will participate in the upcoming summer SPEP rotations starting June 20, 2010.

HMC Primary Health Care Centers

HMC primary health care center pharmacies join the College of Pharmacy to become an approved clinic training site for QU pharmacy students. Airport, Al Gharaffa, Al Rayyan, and West Bay pharmacies will participate in the upcoming summer SPEP rotation starting June 20, 2010.

Providing Feedback SPEP Preceptor Workshop

In preparation for the upcoming SPEP rotations, a 3-hour preceptor workshop has been scheduled for January 13, 2010 from 1800-2100 hrs with a repeated session scheduled for January 20, 2010 from 1800-2100 hrs.  The focus of this workshop will be to provide effective feedback to students.  This workshop will be co-presented by College of the North Atlantic - Qatar and Qatar University College of Pharmacy.  SPEP preceptors and site coordinators are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.

Ebn Sina Medical has signed a clinical training agreement with QU College of Pharmacy and will be affiliated as a partner in the experiential training of our pharmacy students.  The Ebn Sina pharmacies will be involved in the upcoming SPEP rotations starting June 2010.

Qatar's First College of Pharmacy Preceptors

The College of Pharmacy is happy to announce the approval of thirty-one pharmacy preceptors for the first SPEP rotation to take place on June 14, 2009. Pharmacy preceptors were asked to submit an application form and a curriculum vitae for review by the College of Pharmacy. Of the approved applicants,  thirty-one pharmacy  preceptors completed the SPEP Preceptor Training Program.  Congratulations for becoming a preceptor and welcome to the College of Pharmacy!

Alshaya Boots Agrees to Participate in SPEP-1 Rotation

Alshaya Boots Pharmacy has agreed to become a clinical practice site for the first SPEP-1 rotation starting June 14, 2009.  Boots Pharmacy in Landmark has been approved as a community clinical training site.

IMC Signs Clinical Training Agreement

International Medical Co. (IMC) has signed the clinical training agreement with QU College of Pharmacy.  Khulood, Hyatt, Doha, and Khaled pharmacies have been approved as a community clinical training sites for the first SPEP-1 rotation starting June 14, 2009.

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has signed the clinical training agreement with QU College of Pharmacy. Al Amal, Hamad General, and Women's pharmacies have been approved as hospital clinical training sites for the first SPEP-1 rotation starting June 14, 2009.

SPEP Preceptor Training Program

The first workshop to prepare SPEP Preceptors and Site Coordinators for the June 14, 2009 rotation has been scheduled for May 3, 2009 (1800-2100 hrs).  This 3-hour workshop will be repeated on May 6, 2099 (1800-2100 hrs).  SPEP Preceptors and Site Coordinators are expected to attend one of these closed sessions only.  Please contact Dr. Bridget Javed (spep@qu.edu.qa) if you have any questions.

SPEP-1 Rotations Start Date

The first 4-week SPEP rotation has been scheduled to start on June 14, 2009.  Eighteen second-year professional pharmacy (P2) students will be placed in an approved community, clinic or hospital training site, and this will be the first of six 4-week rotations completed before graduation from the accredited BSc (Pharm) program.
