COVID 19 Global Virtual Design & Innovation Competition


Covid-19 has affected billions of people: if not physically then economically and mentally. The need to improve healthcare systems and facilities is evident. With potentially 70% of the population on the brink of being infected by COVID-19, our worldwide health care systems will be strained beyond their limits.
This call for mitigating COVID-19 Global Virtual Design competition is addressing the current and immediate interruption caused by COVID 19, and contribute to the United Nations (SDG) Goals -“Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”, UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 3.
This global virtual challenge aims to push the boundaries of design and product innovation in healthcare to solve a prevalent global health issues. We are looking for out of the box ideas that works now and in the future, as well as solutions that can be scaled-up to improve and enhance patients’ experiences. This challenge ends with a unique, international exhibition of all shortlisted designs.
Our priority is to create an environment that fosters collaboration to allow the best possible designs to see the light. The winning design should support COVID patients anywhere in the world. As such, we are committed to accompany the teams as they work towards meeting the challenge requirements by providing them with technical, engineering, materials and compliance experts who will actively support them in their design.

Design Topics

  • Mobile apps that address and dive into real-life patient COVID-19 cases related to healthcare such as; emergency dispatch; remote healthcare; crowd management and census; profiling the spread among clusters and communities; deep data analysis; security on and off premise cyber assets; and outreach to inspire communities.
  • Non-chemical based disinfection devices or 3D-Technology to build things like ventilator valves, breathing filters and customizable facemasks, etc. to prevent further spread of the virus. The design files for these parts can be produced anywhere in the world to help end-customers bridge potential supply chain interruptions.
  • Design of smart healthy mobile buildings hosting healthcare facilities. A fast-assembled/disassembled, low cost and user-friendly “buildings” that can accommodate infected and cured patients with 0-contagion risk. While providing wellbeing, comfort and healing atmosphere through adequate spatial, artistic and architectural considerations the design of such buildings should be contagion-proofed.

The global virtual design innovation challenge, backed by a US$ 50,000 in total prizes:

  • 1st Winner per category US$ 10,000
  • 2nd winner per category US$ 5,000
  • 3rd winner per category US$ 2,000
  • Scholarships (GRA/GTA) to study Master/PhD programs at College of Engineering, Qatar University (e.g. applicant needs to secure admission to CENG graduate programs).


  • Open to global contestants worldwide
  • Summary text can be in any of UN six official languages (English/Arabic/French/Chinese/Russian and Spanish).
  • Must be an original work
  • You may work as an individual or in teams
  • Participants retain rights to their submissions.
  • Participants grant CENG rights to publish submissions online and in print.

Your idea should be technology-driven; supports sustainable innovation, business viable and value propositioned, and scalable.
Each design team will have two-days of virtual coaching sessions with the challenge coach.
Jury: Global
The challenge jury includes renowned design experts from various fields and from different parts of the world.
Global Contribution
The top design submissions will be available Free for download. The winning design will then be made available for production, anywhere in the world (Open Access).
