Living Lab Doha Concept

The Living Lab Doha is focused on the following themes:

The Urban Water Machine

Expanding the effectiveness of food production on the campus with minimal water availability and energy use. Since water is a scarce resource, water-saving techniques will be applied such as hydroponic farming and sophisticated irrigation systems. In addition, new crops will be tested using innovative methods like microalgae cultivation for animal feed, and fertilizer production using seawater. The energy requirements of the Living Lab will be covered by renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines. 

The Urban Farm

Integrating food production into the city landscapes and buildings at Campus scale. The production site will be composed of urban scale greenhouses and small open field plots.

Soil and Biodiversity

Increasing soil availability and fertility while fostering biodiversity. The production system will use available inputs like water and fertilizers in the most sustainable ways. In this regard, an organic fertilizer (compost) will be produced on-site using food waste collected from QU food courts and agricultural waste. The produced compost will be then used in the soil for the open field trials.

People Engagement and Knowledge-Economy

Engaging stakeholders and the community through participative actions and community gardens. The Doha Living Lab will be open to the community and everyone interested in urban farming. It will be providing a green sheltered area that will act as a meeting point and a recreational area to the whole campus community.

Organic Waste Management

Sustainable managing the organic waste generated in QU Campus and closing the waste loop on the Campus. The food and the agricultural waste generated on the Campus will be composted into biofertilizers and then used in the cultivation of ornamental plants.
