Leadership
The Student Leadership Center (SLC) is a leadership development program and resource center that is open to all Qatar University students. The SLC offers a diverse schedule of leadership training sessions, seminars, conferences, and events. All of our programs are designed and developed to reflect the unique leadership needs of our students.
The Student Leadership Center seeks to train, support, produce, and graduate leaders who are empowered to be effective and productive leaders at QU and in the community. This is consistent with the mission of Qatar University and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Vision
The vision of the Qatar University Student Leadership Center (SLC) is to be the regional model in innovative leadership programs and experiences designed to develop students into ethical, innovative, responsible, civic-minded leaders who contribute positively to their local and global communities.
Mission
The Qatar University Student Leadership Center (SLC) seeks to educate, develop and support the next generation of leaders in Qatar by promoting a strong sense of self-awareness, the ability to work effectively with others, and meaningful civic and social engagement.
Goals
The Student Leadership Center (SLC) strives to meet its mission through a variety of curricular and co-curricular programs that are open to all QU undergraduate students. The SLC provides students a unique opportunity to learn about leadership and professionalism in a formal manner while receiving invaluable, hands-on training that will assist them for a lifetime. The primary goals of the SLC are to:
- Afford students the opportunity to practice leadership skills in areas that will contribute to the success of their personal, academic, and professional goals.
- Serve as an information clearinghouse for leadership programs and opportunities at QU, in Doha, in Qatar and beyond.
- Deliver a comprehensive leadership certificate program that provides students with a structured four-level approach to leadership development and knowledge acquisition.
- Provide a variety of leadership development opportunities within a tiered structure for new (first-year) students, established sophomore/junior leaders, and a capstone program for highly experienced junior/senior leaders.
- Collaborate with departments within and outside of Qatar University to deliver experiential learning opportunities to enhance students’ leadership skills and abilities.
Learning Outcomes
While each program at the SLC has its own specific learning outcomes, the Center seeks to promote several key learning outcomes in alignment with the Qatar University graduate attributes and competencies. As a result of participating in SLC programs, students will be able to:
- Work effectively with others to accomplish a goal or promote change.
- Understand how they can make a difference whether as positional leaders or active participants in a group or community process.
- Develop basic competence in establishing purpose, working collaboratively, and managing conflict.
- Demonstrate an awareness of personal leadership styles and capabilities.
- Appreciate and respect the values, diverse perspectives, and experiences of others.
Leadership Development Certificate Program
The Leadership Development Certificate Program is a unique, integrated and transdisciplinary certificate program for students offered through the Student Leadership Center in collaboration with academic departments, other universities, governmental organizations and entities, and other content experts. This four-part program is designed to meld together traditional concepts of student leadership development, learning and student life to create an experience that prepares students to engage actively in a world that is dynamic, integrated, globally interconnected, and full of challenge. The LEADS Program prepares students “who can get things done in the world and are prepared for effective and engaged citizenship” at all levels of society (Learning Reconsidered, 2004).
Notable Speaker Series
Hosting high profile speakers with extensive experience in leadership in particular and human development in general in order to enrich the student experience.
Mentoring Program
This program is designed to educate and develop students in the area of mentorship. The course builds knowledge, skills, advice, monitoring, and evaluation through the best tools and practices in guidance and coaching. Mentoring and coaching skills are some of the most important skills that a person needs in his/her journey to build his/her leadership capacity.
Targeted Year-to-Year Programs
Outside of the more formally structured certificate course above, the SLC offers a wide range of workshops that focus on leadership learning and professional development. These workshops include specifically targeted experiences for students based on their class standing at QU. Introductory leadership workshops are offered to first-year students while more advanced workshops are available to address the needs of upper-level students.
Experiential Workshop Series
The SLC also offers a series of experiential workshops that are designed to provide students the opportunity to apply leadership theory through hands-on practice. These hands-on workshops allow students to test, experiment, explore, and discover their leadership capabilities within the context of a facilitated activity. The purpose of these experiential workshops is to give students the chance to practice new leadership skills in a supportive learning environment.
Course-linked leadership programs
Co-Curricular experiences designed in conjunction with a faculty member as part of an academic course. While the experience itself is ungraded and not required for the course, it offers students a hands-on learning experience that augments and reinforces in-class learning. These bespoke programs are developed by a co-curricular team that includes faculty, SLC staff, and other community experts.
Student Leadership Conference
Held annually during the early part of the first semester (Fall Semester), this conference seeks to bring university students together from around Qatar (and the GCC area) to have workshops, plenary sessions and keynote speakers to address key areas of leadership development; leadership trends; and future leadership needs locally, regionally and globally.
Annual - Change Begins Here – Camp
Student-led camp with educational guidance, containing interactive activities designed to cultivate and promote the concepts of citizenship and self-reliance as well as positive thinking and behavior. In addition, the program seeks to make a positive change in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the university students to be productive and active in society.
