Get Advised

For every academic program there is an assigned advisor to assist students in their registration process for each semester and to provide them with the best source of information about program requirements, course prerequisites, study plans and the selection of electives. Furthermore, advisors also provide students with information about alternative subjects, Registration limitations, changes to study plans, and the different circumstances of student's decisions.

Who is my advisor?

You can find out who your advisor is by logging to myQU Portal. Under the tab "myAcademics" your advisor information should appear in the second block of information in channel Academic Profile. If you do not see information on your advisor, then you need to contact the department within the college you declared into.

Regular advisor contact assists students to be aware of the most current academic information and supports progress towards Qatar University educational goals. QU strives to maintain that progress and encourages professional academic advising university-wide.

Prepare and plan your class schedule

You should use the class schedules to find classes for the next course you are planning to enroll in. If you are a first-year student, then you must review the timing of Classes at Qatar University, which can be found in the Registration instructions that are updated at the beginning of each semester. For an easy registration process you may print the Registration Worksheet (pdf, excel, word) and use it as a handy reference.

  1. CRN: This is the reference number of the course and will appear next to each class's name in the schedule.

  2. Course (Subject /Number): This is a new code system for classes made up of letters and numbers rather than the old number system.

  3. The title of the subject.

  4. Subject's credit hours.

  5. Time: start and end of the lecture.

  6. Days of the week the class is scheduled on (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).

  7. Course instructor.

Check for prerequisites, Restrictions and Academic Loads

Students are advised to check whether they have met the prerequisites for courses they are going to register into Students can view course prerequisites and course restrictions using myQU portal by entering the course's CRN in the field 'Class Search' and clicking on the CRN that appears on the search results page. The study plan for each program also identifies this information.

Students should not exceed the maximum allowed Academic Load and should ensure that their total registered hours do not fall below the minimum number of allowed Academic Load in a semester. The Academic Load is the maximum / minimum number of credit hours a student is allowed to register for in a semester.

Students are allowed to pre-register for a course whose prerequisites have not been yet completed, on the assumption that prerequisite courses will be passed during the semester in which the pre-registration is taking place. However, the Registrar's office will drop students, without notification, from any pre-registered courses for which they failed prerequisite(s) in. Consequently, the student is responsible for checking his/her final grades to make sure that prerequisites for pre-registered courses have successfully been completed and that he/she is successfully registered for the courses in the following semester.

The minimum and maximum number of credit hours allowed per semester is as follows:
  • A regular full-time student is permitted to have a semester course load of 12 to 18 credit hours.

  •  A regular full-time student who is on academic probation is permitted to have a semester course load of 8 to12 credit hours.

  • A regular part-time student is permitted to have a semester course load of 1 to11 credit hours.

  • A regular part-time student who is on academic probation is permitted to have a semester course load of 1 to 9 credit hours.

  • The course load for all students during the summer session is 2 to 9 credit hours.

  • A new student at the University will be allowed to register for the maximum number of credit hours allowed by his/her program.

  • Any student whose cumulative grade point average is 3.5 or above based on 15 credit hours or more may register for an additional 3 credit hours over the designated academic load.

  • Students in their final semester before graduating may register for less credit hours than the minimum academic load designated above. Such a request must be made by the student's advisor and must have the approval of the Dean in the concerned college.

Check your holds

It is the student's responsibility to verify is he/she has any holds. Holds place a 'block' on students' account that prevents them from registering, obtaining academic documents and even graduating. In order to remove a hold the student must refer to the office that placed the hold. Students can verify whether they have a hold by logging into their myQU Portal account and referring to the Registration Status page.

If you have a hold, you will see the following message:

In this case, when you open the Add or Drop Classes page, the following message will appear:

For further information regarding registration, holds and statuses, please contact the Office of the Registrar or your advisor. The information below will provide an explanation regarding why a hold was placed and who a student should contact for clearance.

Lab courses

Lab courses are usually assigned with the theoretical courses, especially in scientific and practical programs. Students should make sure there is a lab course for the registered subject. Verifying this information will avoid, problems a student may face with his/her academic plan and will save the student from the time and effort that would be spent resolving such problems during the registration period.

Avoid Time conflict

Students should consult the schedule of classes before registering to avoid time conflicts between registered classes. A time conflict occurs when a student registers in two courses scheduled at the same time.

QU ID

A student must have a university identification number (ID) to be able to register into classes, and access several other academic and service resources. A student obtains his/her ID from the Office of Admissions upon enrollment at Qatar University and obtains his/her ID card from the Business Operation Department. A student's user ID and password must be valid in order to log into the registration system (myBanner).

Students should contact the ITS helpdesk for any questions or problems with their user ID.
