Qatar University (QU) has successfully organized the Fifth Youth Research Forum 2023 in collaboration with several local and international partners. The forum focused on “Higher Education Institutions’ role in achieving sustainable development goals”. The forum brought together students interested in research from different fields around the world. The forum also included a session for research posters, where participants presented their research projects related to the forum's theme. The research posters covered diverse topics such as sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture, sustainable transportation, and sustainable cities.

The forum provided a platform for participants to present their research findings, exchange ideas, and discuss the role of higher education institutions in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs consist of a set of seven global goals identified by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs cover a range of issues such as poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation, and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, and peace and justice.

The Fifth Youth Research Forum 2023 achieved great success, providing the participants with the opportunity to share their research findings and learn from others experiences. The forum also provided an excellent platform for networking and collaborating among the participants. The forum received 276 research abstracts and posters, of which 186 met the necessary requirements for participation. The accepted submissions included 36 abstracts and posters from 17 countries, such as Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, Yemen, Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Palestine, Iran, Mauritania, Tajikistan, Sweden, Italy, Canada, Russia, and others.

Among all the participants, a team of faculty members and students from the College of Dental Medicine at QU won the recent competition by presenting their research posters titled "The Relationship between Oral Health and Stomach Cancer: A Systematic Review." The winning team comprised some third-year students: Ayah Osama Saleh El-Zaini, Rana Adil Hakim Khalid, Reem Ahmed Elsafty, Shahad Raed Hamed Al-Biltaji, second-year students Iman Mahamade Ali, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Sadig, and Omar Mohamed Elsayed Mahmoud Saleh, and Ayaha Elsakka, a graduate of the College of Health Sciences.

The winning team adopted a successful approach by starting with a clear research question and identifying gaps in the current research. They conducted a new research study to address these gaps, focusing on developing their research skills and presentation skills to convey the research findings effectively. Shahad Al-Biltaji, a third-year student, stated, “Joining the summer research training program has been a wonderful experience through which I have gained new and diverse skills. I am extremely grateful to be part of this team because, without the contributions of each team member, our victory would not have been possible. One of the key reasons for the team's success is the guidance and support provided by Dr. Sadeq Al-Maweri, an Associate Professor in Oral Medicine at QU’s College of Dental Medicine, and Dr. Tayeb Al-Hadithi, a research assistant at QU’s College of Dental Medicine.”

From her side, Dr. Tayeb stated, “Success is achieved through a combination of factors, including teamwork, college guidelines and instructions, students' knowledge and enthusiasm, and researchers' clear vision.”

The College of Dental Medicine at QU Health and Medical Sciences sector is proud of the participating team’s achievements in the fifth Youth Research Forum. This success reflects the college's commitment to promoting and supporting research excellence among its students.
