Accreditation
The Computer Science and Engineering Department was established from two programs: Computer Science (CS) and Computer Engineering (CE). Qatar University established the CS program in 1989 in the college of arts and science. The CE program was established in 2001 within the Electrical Engineering department. In 2004, the CS program was moved to the College of Engineering and together with CE program formed the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. In Fall2012, the Computer Engineering program established the male section (used to be only for female students). The program was extended to meet the students demands, and respond to constituencies feedback about the rising demands for computing professionals in Qatar. Over the years, the department has grown to become one of the largest in the College of Engineering with two undergraduate programs, one master program (Master In Computing), and one PhD program with two concentrations (Computer Science and Computer Engineering).
The department has adopted a systematic process for quality assurance applied to its programs. The department has also moved through the required stages that lead to accreditation for its programs, according to the standards of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). ABET is a highly recognized and internationally respected accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. ABET has set the higher-educational standards in its fields for nearly 75 years.
The Computer Engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commissions; EAC of ABET, http://www.abet.org. The Computer Science program is also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. Accreditation is a process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations, and assures that the graduates are well-prepared and ready for advanced study and real-world employment. It helps students and their parents to choose quality accredited university programs. It also motivates institutions to apply systematic and effective continuous improvement methods through program’s assessment and evaluation.
