Dr. Sami Ismail Mahmoud Zaqout​ QU Health, College of Medicine

Dr. Sami Zaqout (MD, MSc, PhD), is an Assistant Professor of Anatomy at Qatar University’s College of Medicine, with expertise spanning anatomy, neuroscience, medical education, and the integration of artificial intelligence into health professions education.

He earned his medical degree from Damascus University and an MSc in Anatomy from Jordan University of Science and Technology, followed by an MD/PhD in Medical Neurosciences at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. His research on cerebral cortical development and neuronal morphology has produced multiple publications, including a widely cited paper on the Golgi staining method. His technical experience includes immunohistochemistry, histology, western blotting, primary neuronal culture, and live-cell imaging.

At Qatar University, Dr. Zaqout contributes extensively to curriculum development, assessment design, and educational quality assurance. As OSPE Coordinator for Phase II, he leads exam development and psychometric evaluation to ensure robust assessment standards.

Dr. Zaqout is also at the forefront of applying AI in medical education, conducting research on AI-generated exam questions, predictive validity analytics, and innovative assessment models using large language models. He actively supports faculty and students in adopting AI tools effectively and ethically.

His teaching experience spans multiple countries and modalities, including cadaveric anatomy, plastinated models, and digital 3D technologies, reflecting his commitment to modern, student-centered medical education.

Dr. Ajith Sominanda QU Health, College of Medicine

Dr. Ajith Sominanda Herath is an Associate Professor of Anatomy and Basic Medical Sciences at College of Medicine, Qatar University, with over two decades of academic, research, and clinical experience across Sri Lanka, Sweden, Germany, and Qatar. His work spans neuroimmunology, biomechanics, and technology-enhanced medical education. He leads projects on tumor immune microenvironments, human movement biomechanics, and micro-mobility, collaborating with the College of Engineering at Qatar University and photogrammetry-based efforts to enhance spatial understanding of human anatomy. His current research focuses on integrating biomechanical analytics into pedestrian safety for those confronting day-to-day micro mobility vehicles, and on AI/VR/3D assessment tools to advance anatomy learning and evaluation.
