Training

The training program consists of both theoretical and practical components. The theoretical course is mandatory for all researchers, including Principal Investigators, Research Assistants, and students, who intend to utilize the facilities of the Qatar University Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC), irrespective of any prior training received at other institutions. The practical (hands-on) course is mandatory only for personnel who will be directly involved in the handling of live animals at LARC.  

It is our obligation to help researchers and students be trained and certified to use laboratory animals at LARC in a humane and responsible manner. This training program will give trainees a general understanding of the regulations and responsibilities involved in using laboratory animals for research. Successful participants will be awarded course completion certificates. A copy of the HCULA certificate should be submitted with research protocols for QU-IACUC approval.  

Target audience:

• Theory Course: Required for all researchers, including Principal Investigators, Research Assistants, and students, who intend to use LARC for their animal research projects approved by the QU-IACUC.
• Hands-on Course: Required only for personnel who will directly handle live laboratory animals as part of their animal research projects approved by the QU-IACUC at LARC.

   Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion, which is valid for three years. The techniques demonstrated in this course are at a basic level. Passing the course does not indicate competency; therefore, more practice is required to ensure that the individual fully integrates and learns the techniques before starting to use them.  

   QU undergraduate students who are eligible to attend the course are required to complete the Student Registration Form, obtain the required signature and faculty stamp, and submit the form in addition to completing the online registration.

Euthanasia is an important component of animal research. Researchers use humane methods to euthanize their research animals and collect tissue samples. The objectives of this basic training module are:       

1. To define humane euthanasia methods in rodent research
2. To understand the importance of necropsy procedures in rodent research
3. To learn organ collection procedures

This training program includes both theoretical and hands-on instructions. It offers a great opportunity for science and medical students to gain knowledge on the basics of rodent euthanasia, necropsy, and organ collection procedures in rodents (rats and mice). Successful participants will be awarded a participation certificate.

• Date: Sunday June 7^th 2026.
• Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
• Targeted Audience: This basic module I is restricted to undergraduate students from the Health cluster, Biology, and Chemistry departments.

  To maintain a good ratio of tutors to participants, only 10 participants will be allowed to attend the course. Preference will be given to undergraduate students (third year and above) who have not previously participated in this program and who have successfully completed the registration process and received a confirmation email.

This is a basic training program on Anaesthesia and Analgesia in Laboratory Rodents.      

Module I focuses on the use of anaesthetics and analgesics for animal experiments. Experimental procedures on lab animals often require anaesthesia and analgesia to achieve adequate immobilization and to reduce stress or pain. This training module covers both theoretical and hands-on instructions on basic rodent anaesthesia, common rodent anaesthetics, use of anaesthesia machines, induction, monitoring anaesthesia, and recovery.       

The program offers a great opportunity for students to gain knowledge on basic rodent anaesthesia and analgesia, selection of anaesthetics, and pre- and post-operative care of animals. Successful participants will be awarded participation certificates.

   Time: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
