    Frequently Asked Questions

Section 1: Transfer to the College of Engineering

Answer: The admission of new students to the various colleges of Qatar University is the responsibility of the University’s Admissions Department and is subject to its rules and regulations. Please note that admission to Qatar University is competitive and subject to the capacity of each college. We advise you to contact the Admissions Department or visit the official university website; you may also call the Student Call Center at 44034444 for more information.
Answer: In each cycle of the Change of Major process, the number of seats available in the college is reviewed. Applicant lists are then divided into categories according to the number of credit hours earned at the university, and a set number of students from each category is admitted on a competitive basis, based on high school performance and university GPA (where applicable).
Answer: Students applying from outside the College of Engineering are initially admitted into one of two majors only: General Engineering or Engineering Foundation; they are not admitted directly into the requested major. In the phase following admission, the college contacts the student to complete the major declaration form, after which the student goes through the same competitive major declaration process as all General Engineering students.
Answer: Yes, passing the Foundation requirements is a mandatory prerequisite for transfer acceptance into the College of Engineering. In some special cases, a student may be admitted into Engineering Foundation. Results are announced during the application semester itself, and decisions are not deferred to the end of the semester.
Answer: Requests to change major between programs within the College of Engineering are submitted through the electronic Change of Major system, which is announced by the Qatar University Transfer Section at the beginning of each semester. The requirements for transferring between departments within the College of Engineering are those of the requested department itself, and students can check them directly with the department they intend to transfer to when applying.
Answer: The maximum number of earned credit hours a student may have in order to apply for a change of major—whether internally between college programs or externally to another college—is 60 earned credit hours, in accordance with university policies (see the Student Catalog, page 127). The e-Transfer system does not allow students to apply once they have exceeded this number. However, a student who has exceeded 60 hours may submit an official request to the college to consider their transfer application; if approved, the college will add their name to the list of applicants.

    Section 2: Major Declaration

Answer: During the semester, the college contacts General Engineering and Foundation students to complete the electronic major declaration form, in which the student selects five (5) majors ranked in order of preference. At the end of the semester, after grades are posted, the college reviews the applications of all students who have completed the Foundation Program requirements and whose current major is General Engineering. Admission to majors is competitive and depends primarily on the following:
    • High school GPA.
    • Additional requirements that are sometimes applied to high-demand majors, such as the student’s grades in specific courses and cumulative GPA.
    • For the Architecture major, passing the Architecture Aptitude Test is a mandatory prerequisite.
Answer: Major declaration is restricted to General Engineering students. If a student is in the Foundation Program requirements during the semester, their status is reviewed at the end of the semester; if they have completed the Foundation Program requirements, they are then assigned a major.
    Answer:
    1. Change of Major results: Announced by the Qatar University Transfer Section before the end of the semester.
    2. Major Declaration results: Announced by the college itself (College of Engineering Student Affairs Office) at the end of the semester, once the students who have completed the Foundation Program requirements have officially moved into General Engineering.
