    Standard Techniques in Microbiology and their working Principles

    Introduction:

    Qatar University Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) is a state of the art core facility with a finely controlled specific pathogen free (SPF) vivarium to assure excellent husbandry and humane care of the research animals. In addition to the vivarium, LARC has specialized diagnostic labs to provide in-house diagnostic tests that involve environmental and health-monitoring programs. Both are critical to maintain the specific pathogen free husbandry conditions and the health of the research animals.

    Program Overview:

    The diagnostic labs at LARC offers and host summer internship program of two weeks duration to support the students and researchers to enhance the knowledge on biosafety practices, Instrumentation, principles of diagnostics microbiological techniques, and Laboratory risk – waste management. The interns will have the opportunity to interact with the specialist in microbiological techniques and carry out diagnostic work with environmental samples. The participating interns awarded with a certificate on successful completion of the program.

    Objectives:

    • Acquire advanced knowledge on Laboratory Biosafety and Good Lab Practices (GLP).
    • Learn the principles of microbiological techniques.
    • Develop methodology for environmental quality assessment.
    • Develop interpretation skill of diagnostic results.
    • Learn writing and presentation skills and techniques.

    Course Duration:

    Two Weeks (11th June 2023 to 22nd June 2023)

    Evaluation:

    In order to get Internship certification, the intern must fulfill the following criteria:

    • Attendance and participation of all the activities (presentations and assignments).
    • Final presentation given by intern.

    Rodent Quality Assurance Testing Program at Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC)

    Program Overview:

    Laboratory animals continue to serve an important role in studying human biology, disease and advancing medical technologies and new therapeutic strategies. LARC is Specific Pathogenic Free (SPF) facility that provides high quality laboratory animals, ensures humane care and use of laboratory animals, provides expert technical knowledge, and provides training for all faculty, researchers and students. Animal experimentation largely depends upon on the quality and reliability of animals, husbandry and diagnostic procedures.

    The one-week winter internship program at LARC provides an opportunity for the students to gain more knowledge about various animal models involved in biomedical research, understand rodent health monitoring program and vivarium management system. The participating interns will be awarded with a certificate upon successful completion of the program.

    Objectives:

    • To gain introductory information about use of laboratory animals in biomedical research
    • To learn the principles of rodent health monitoring program.
    • To understand Vivarium requirements.

    Course Duration:

    One Week: 19th -23rd December 2021

    Evaluation:

    In order to get Internship certification, the intern must fulfill the following criteria:

    • Attendance and participation of all the activities (presentations).
    • Final presentation given by intern.

    The diagnostic labs at LARC offers and host an online internship program of three weeks duration to support the students and researchers to enhance the knowledge on Animal ethics, biosafety practices, principles of diagnostics techniques, rodent health monitoring, molecular techniques, cell culture basic and Laboratory risk – waste management. The program enhances interaction with the specialist in Rodent health monitoring to establish and carry out diagnostic work with animal samples. The participating interns will be awarded with a certificate on successful completion of the program.

    • Learn the principles of rodent health monitoring.
    • Develop methodology for animal diagnostics, molecular techniques and cell culture.

    • Passing Basic examination after end of the internship program.

    • Registration will be open from Saturday May 1 2021 to Monday May 24 2021.

    Supervisory Team:

    Our professional staff in the Laboratory division will train, supervise, and evaluate the intern to ensures that the intern gets the most out of their internship experience through provision of close supervision, guidance, daily online meeting, presentations and evaluation. The team will help the intern to write a final report and presentation of their internship work.

    Evaluation:

    In order to get Internship certification, the internee must fulfill the following criteria:

    • Title: Basic Animal Husbandry procedures and Diagnostic Techniques

      QU - LARC Summer internship program designed to give experience focused on Rodent vivarium ethics, regulation, hands on research experience in rodent handling and care along with microbiological and molecular diagnostic methods to identify rodent pathogens.

      LARC offers five weeks internship program to support the students and researchers to develop hands on experience in handling rat and mice species along with the lab based diagnostic protocol for pathogen identification in rodent samples such as blood, tissue, urine, feces and bedding materials. LARC team will train and support the intern to collect the data and prepare a final report and present as a scientific presentation. Each interns will get a rotation tenure of two weeks in the vivarium followed by two weeks of lab work (Micro & Molecular methods) using the rodent samples collected from the vivarium. The overall learning through this internship will be assessed at the last week during this time the interns are expected to present their consolidated work.
