Dr. Maha Al-Asmakh is an associate professor and the Head of Biomedical Science Department at
the College of Health Science, Qatar University since September 2020. She obtained her BSc in
Biomedical Sciences (Hons) from Qatar University. She then continued her postgraduate studies and
obtained her MSc in Human Reproductive Biology from Imperial College London. She received her
Doctor's degree (Ph.D.) from Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Dr.Al-Asmakh research
interest is in the field of microbiome and Zebrafish toxicology. Dr. Al-Asmakh is an adjuvant research
associate professor at the Biomedical Research Center at Qatar University and an active member of
many academic and research committees at the University level. She serves as a reviewer for
several scientific journals and research grants and is a member of the International Society of
Microbiota.

Dr Asmaa Al-Thani is Professor of Virology at the Biomedical Sciences Department in the College of Health Sciences with a joint appointment to the Biomedical Research Center (BRC), Qatar University and Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
In addition to her academic roles, Prof. Al-Thani holds the portfolio of Vice President for Health and Medical Sciences, QU Health, Qatar University. The portfolio follows a record of accomplishment in establishing the academic and research infrastructure for biomedical sciences at Qatar University, including her roles as the Founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences (2016) and the Founding Director of the BRC (2014). Professor Al-Thani’s contribution to the national landscape of biomedical research includes her roles as Vice Chairperson of the Qatar Biobank Board, Chairperson of the National Qatar Genome Committee and establishing National Reference laboratory-Covid19 Unit.
Professor Al-Thani is an active researchers and widely published author in her field of expertise, with over100 published papers in peer-reviewed international journals and around 32 internal and external research grants. She is a reviewer for several scientific journals and conferences and is a member of the American society for Microbiology.
Her accomplishments have been recognized with a number of awards, including the Astrolabi Award from WCMC-Q (2020), the State Encouraging Award in the Medical Sciences and Nursing (2017), the Sheikh Hummaid Bin Rashid Award for Culture and Sciences (2006), Al-Jasra Cultural Club –Qatar (2008), Qatar University Outstanding Faculty Service Award (2012), the College of Arts and Sciences Research Award (2012), and the Arab Paediatric Medical Research Award (2015).

Prof. Ahmed Malki earned his PhD in Biochemistry in the field of molecular oncology from Ohio University in USA in 2006. Right after, he held postdoctoral position at the University of California Berkeley in 2007, USA. Prof. Ahmed Malki was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of science, Alexandria University in 2008; then he promoted to Associate Professor of Biochemistry in 2013 from Alexandria University. His research focus on the understanding of the signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation, cell death and designing novel anticancer drugs targeting tumor suppressors and he is currently serving in editorial board member in a number of international journals. He presented his research findings as an invited speaker at multiple international conferences and professional meetings and has more than 20 years of experience in academia teaching undergraduate, graduate courses, supervising students and applied research.

Dr. Layla Y. Kamareddine holds a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the American University of Beirut and is currently the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Health Sciences and an Assistant Professor in Microbiology and Immunology at the Biomedical Sciences Department in the College of Health Sciences at Qatar University. Before joining Qatar University in 2018, she worked at the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital as a research fellow and was an affiliated member of the scientific committee at The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Throughout her academic career, she contributed significantly to several portfolios including teaching, research, and committee service. Dr. Kamareddine currently chairs and serves on key college and university committees, including College Council, College Academic Committee, College Recruitment Committee, and College Retention Committee. Dr. Kamareddine also teaches a number of undergraduate and graduate courses including Diagnostic Microbiology, Immunology and Serology, Directed studies in Biomedical Sciences, and others. She is also an active researcher and her interdisciplinary research unites vector biology, innate immunology, microbiology, and cell and molecular biology. Her main research interest falls in the context of host-pathogen interactions, with particular focus on unraveling the role of the innate immune system in blocking the development of a broad spectrum of pathogens using invertebrate model organisms. She is also interested in understanding the interplay between innate immunity and other physiological process. The upshot of her research work revealed groundbreaking findings some of which were published in high impact peer reviewed journals, including Cell Metabolism, Nature Microbiology, and Immunity. Dr. Kamareddine is also an editorial board member and an ad hoc reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. She is a recipient of several awards; the latest of which was at the Qatar University Annual Research Forum and Exhibition in recognition of her work on Population, Health, and Wellness Research.

Prof. Marawan Abu-Madi joined the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Qatar University in 2004 and appointed as Program Director since 2016. He was promoted to the position of Professor in 2021. He taught several courses for Biomedical Sciences including Medical Parasitology, Laboratory Management, Special topics in medical laboratory methodology, in addition to Professional Development and Clinical Practice courses. During this time, he have also participated in numerous internal and external committees such as research committee, institutional biosafety committee, and program learning outcome committee. Despite his teaching responsibilities, he obtained the certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) in 2013 and served as External reviewer and Site-Visitor for NAACLS accredited programs.
He advanced his research in parallel to his academic career, holding several research grants in the field of Medical Parasitology and Infectious Diseases. And supervised many undergraduate students, 10 graduate students, two Post-Doctoral Fellow, and Four research assistants. These continuous efforts have produced publications in reputable international journals since he joined the department.

Dr. Nasser Rizk (MD, Ph.D.) is an associate professor in the BMS Department of CHS at Queen's University. Dr. Rizk earned his M.M.B.ch in medicine and surgery with honors from Egypt's Al-Mansoura College of Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. in hyperglycemia, GLUTs, and mechanisms of skeletal muscle insulin resistance at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in the United States, in partnership with Al-Mansoura College of Medicine, from 1992 to 1994. Dr. Rizk worked as a visiting scientist at the Diabetes Research Institute in Dusseldorf, Germany, from 1996 to 2001. He obtained multiple grants for research on leptin physiology and cytokines at the hypothalamus level, as well as the autocrine and paracrine effects of adipocytes and the involvement of adiponectin. Then, he joined Qatar University's Biomedical Sciences department as an Associate Professor of Physiology, Endocrine, and Metabolism, where he taught physiology, pathophysiology, endocrinology, and bodily fluids. Since 2006, Dr. Rizk has received many fundings from HMC, 50 QU grants, and four NPRP projects from QNRF (2009, 2012, 2015, and 2016) as lead and co-lead PI, as well as 16 UREP grants from QNRF (2008-2015). In addition, he supervised the graduation projects of more than 50 undergraduate students and 20 masters, and three doctoral students. In his field of obesity, diabetes research, and clinical genetic association studies, he has published more than 43 clinical and fundamental research studies in highly-respected peer-reviewed journals and more than 70 conference papers and presentations. Dr. Rizk specializes in the clinical and molecular aspects of obesity and diabetes. His research interests include the pathophysiology and consequences of insulin resistance states and their regulatory pathways and biomarkers. His research has primarily focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying obesity at the cellular and molecular levels, identifying biomarkers linked to complications, and investigating the underlying mechanisms in the development of diabetic retinopathy in diabetes. He is also interested in obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease genetic investigations. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, FASEB, American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, Obesity, and ARVO, among other international groups.

Dr. Gheyath Nasrallah is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Health Sciences, Qatar University. He joined Dalhousie University/Halifax, Canada, to pursue a PhD in Microbiology & Immunology in Dr. Rafael Garduno’s lab. He received his postdoctoral fellowship training in Dr. Jason Berman’s zebrafish lab at the IWK Health Center/Canada. After that, Dr. Nasrallah joined the College of Health Sciences/Department of Biomedical Sciences at Qatar University (QU) in 2012 as an assistant professor. Dr. Nasrallah’s lab is located in the Biomedical Research Center at Qatar University, Qatar, with a main area of research in (serology/infectious disease). Recently, the lab received several grants from QNRF (NPRP, PPM, UREP) and Qatar University (Internal Collaboration Grants and International Research Collaboration Co-Fund). Also received several in-kind and financial support from several diagnostic and pharmaceutical companies, including bioMérieux (France), Euroimmune and Novates Diagnostics (Germany) Abbott and MP Biomedical (USA), and Mindray and Wondfo (China). Dr Houssein Khodjet Elkhil had his PhD in 2003 in human genetics from the University of Tunis El Manar in Tunisia. He had several post doctorate follows in Pasteur Institute of Paris in France, institute of forensic medicine at the University of Saint Jacques de Compostela in Galicia in Spain and the institute of pathology and molecular immunology of Porto (IPATIMUP) at the University of Porto in Portugal. He started his teaching experience in the University of Sfax in the south of Tunisia followed by the University of Tunis El Manar in the North from year 2000 to 2010. He joined King Faisal University in KSA in 2010 where he served as assistant professor in the College of Applied Medical Sciences (CAMS) and the College of Medicine. He joined the college of Health sciences in Qatar University in 2018 as Associate professor. During his academic carrier, Dr Houssein Khodjet Elkhil has been in charge of teaching undergraduate and graduate students mainly Molecular genetics, Medical genetics, Forensic and population genetics. In the college of health sciences he contributed to implement a new master program of genetic counselling launched in 2018. He was involved in many committees, department and college counsels as well as head of department of Biotechnology in the institute of medical technologies in Tunisia. Dr Houssein has more than 20 years research activity in the field of medical genetics and genomics and forensic and population genetics. He published more 30 articles in peer reviewed journals and supervised many undergaduate students, 6 graduate students and 1 PhD. He was co-supervisor of 3 PhD students. He was internal and external examiner in several undergraduate, graduate and PhD thesis projects and he is reviewer in different scientific journals (Forensic Science International, genetics; Journal of forensic reports; Molecular biology reports; Cancer investigation; PlosOne).

Dr Mashael Al-Shafai is Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences and the Head of Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) - Qatar University. Dr Al-Shafai obtained her PhD in Clinical Medicine Research from Imperial College London, UK. Her research interests lie in the area of medical genetics and genomics, particularly in obesity and T2D. Dr Al-Shafai has several publications in international journals and has obtained several grants from QU and Qatar National Research Fund for her work. In addition, Dr Al-Shafai led the establishment of the genetic counselling master program at CHS, which has stated in 2018. She is also a member in Qatar Genome Project Consortium analyzing over 14,000 genomes to facilitate the implementation of precision medicine in Qatar. Dr Al-Shafai has participated in a number of committees at the department, college and university levels such as the curriculum, the recruitment and graduate committees, and is the chair for the research and graduate studies committee at CHS. Dr Al-Shafai is also a former chair and a current member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Qatar University.

Dr Elham Sharif has completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Clinical Chemistry) from the University of West of England at Bristol, United Kingdom in January 2009. She was awarded the Sigma Diagnostic Prize for Best Overall Achievements in the Master Degree studies. Her BSc was in Biomedical Sciences with Excellent GPA, Qatar university. She is still working at Qatar University as an assistant professor of Biomedical Sciences. She is mainly teaching Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology, Pharmacology & Toxicology. Her research was focused upon using novel methods of utilizing Magneto Immunoassay. Her dissertation research was on “The Rapid Measurements of LNCAP Intracellular PSA as A Model for a Novel Cell Based Diagnostic Exploiting Magneto Immunoassay”. Meanwhile her research interest is focused on conditions related to diseases occurring in Qatar and would like to establish a research group to investigate conditions that affect the life style impact in Qatar especially topics related to women’s health. Dr Elham presented her work several times in international conferences mainly the American association of clinical chemistry. In 2011 she published an article titled: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among female college students at Qatar University. Currently she is working with Dr Nasser Rizk in investigating different conditions related to vitamin D deficiency. Since two years she establish and organize "vitamin D deficiency awareness Day ", Aiming to raise health awareness in the university and community, as well as providing a healthy safe environment at her Department of Health Sciences in College of Arts & Sciences in Qatar University (QU).

Dr. Hatem Zayed is an Associate Professor Biomedical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Qatar University. He did his Ph.D. in molecular medicine (genetic therapy), Free University of Berlin, Germany. Dr. Zayed got his professional training in Stem-cells based gene therapy at the university of Minnesota twin cities, in medical genetics at the University of California Medical School, San Francisco, California, and in clinical molecular genetics at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Dr. Zayed had experience in industry in Lentigen Corporation (Miltenyi Biotec), and Genzyme Genetics (LabCorp), where he was working in genetic therapy and clinical molecular diagnostics. He has extensive experience in studying the genetic etiology of genetic diseases using the state-of-the-art genomic technology. Currently, Dr. Zayed is working in genomic medicine, precision medicine, molecular oncology, and structural bioinformatics.

Dr. Atiyeh Abdallah joined QU as assistant professor in biomedical sciences in 2019 teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students. He received his PhD in human genetics from Imperial College London in 2007. He served as a clinical research fellow at King’s College London (2007-2009) where he studied leukaemia patients post bone marrow transplantation. Dr Abdallah served as clinical scientist in molecular genetics and cytogenetics diagnostics for 10 years in different major hospitals across the UK. Then he moved to Saudi Arabia as assistant professor at College of Medicine, Taibah University, where he was involved in teaching and establishing the first next generation sequencing laboratory. During his clinical and academic experiences, Dr Abdallah developed research interest in the genetic predisposition of rheumatic disorders especially paediatric rheumatic heart disease. At QU, Dr Abdallah is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and serves as a member of several committees at the college and health cluster levels. He is also the chair of the QU Health and Safety Committee. He published over 30 articles and book chapters. Dr Abdallah is a board certified scientist in Clinical Molecular Pathology MB(ASCP)-the USA and a Follow of Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS)-the UK.

Dr Wisam Nabeel is an assistant Professor in the department of biomedical sciences, college of Health sciences, Qatar university since 2019. Before that he was an assistant Professor in the international Islamic university Malaysia for 8 years. Dr Wisam is a medical doctor with master’s degree in human physiology and PhD in biomedical sciences from the international Islamic university Malaysia. He published over 20 articles in high impact journals in topics related to cancer pathogenesis and treatment. He also reviewed over 30 manuscripts for journals from Springer nature, Elsevier, Frontiers, and Tayler and Francis in topics related to cancer biology. He secured several competitive grants during his work in Malaysia and is involved with many collaborative projects with universities in Oman like SQU and in Malaysia including UKM, USM, UPM and IIUM. He is a member of the biochemical society in the United Kingdom and the American association for cancer research.

Currently she is an assistant professor at the biomedical department (college of health sciences, QU). Her main teaching courses are human histology, histopathology, cytogenetics and Developmental Biology. Her previous search topics were on: Investigation the impact of Fludarabine and Doxorubicin on chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (The medical research laboratory, department of biology, University of Hull, UK) (2010). Along to the investigation the role of Sp1 transcription factor in colorectal cancer progression (School of environmental, biological and medical school, University of Hull, UK) (2011-2013). Additionally investigating the effect of Omega-3 fatty acid on inflammatory biomarker sin COPD (School of environmental and life Sciences, University of Salford, Manchester, UK) (2015-2019). In 2022, she was awarded with internal grant for the topic ‘Identification of inflammation related Treg signatures in myelodysplastic syndrome patients’. The research still in progress.

Rozaimi Razali is an Assistant Professor at Qatar University where he is involved in various bioinformatics related research. He received his PhD from the Imperial College London, United Kingdom. Previously, he was a Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Medical and Population Genomics Lab, Sidra Medicine, Qatar and prior to that, a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, where he led the de-novo genome assembly project of the tomato genome (Solanum pimpinellifolium) as well as metagenomics and antimicrobial bioprospecting of the Red Sea. Prior to joining the academia, he was a Bioinformatics Manager at a biotechnology company, Sengenics, where he led the Bioinformatics team in charge of the analysis of next-generation sequencing (clinical exomes, whole genomes and RNA-seq). Currently, he is leading key research within the population genetics, genome assemblies of microbes and vertebrates as well as applying high resolution short and long sequencing reads to enhance disease gene discovery and build genomic references for the various world population.

She had taught in the Human Physiology Labs to students from different colleges such as Biomedical Sciences, Human Nutrition , Pharmacy , Physiotherapy, and Sports Science among them. As a Teaching Assistant , she assisted in carrying out the tasks of the Primary Course Coordinator and also gives introductory lectures in the Laboratory for the different Body systems that are included in the Course Syllabus. She had taught procedures to students that are related to the different body systems in order for students to understand more the concepts being given in the lectures. Procedures include doing ECG and reading the results , doing the Spirometry , Pulmonary Function Test, Vital signs monitoring etc.. More procedures are being done in the lab. Mrs. Maria brings in to her position a vast experience in bedside patient care at the hospital setting which include Medical – Surgical Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynecology , Emergency Care Nursing and the ICU. She had worked as a Headnurse at the Surgical Department of Hamad Medical Corporation where she gained experience in Management, budgeting and staffing as well as teaching . She underwent special trainings while at the hospital such as Preparing treatments of Oncology drugs etc.. She worked in Hamad Medical Corporation for twelve years before joining the University in 1993. Before joining HMC, she worked as a Charge Nurse for 7 years in Hospital of Manila , the government hospital of the City of Manila , Philippines. In this hospital, she gained wide experience in patient care at almost all levels and at different wards. While at Qatar University , she had attended many conferences and seminars, and was assigned to several Committees at the Department level. Maria holds a degree in Bachelor Of Science in Nursing , from Colegio De San Agustin – Bacolod (Philippines) - a five year degree program that included Leadership and Management in its final year. She passed the Nursing Board Examinations and became a Registered Nurse in the same year of graduation -1976. She became a member of the Philippine Nurses Association and the International Council of Nurses during her first few years in Qatar.

Ms. Amal is a teaching assistant for laboratory-based sessions related to Human Structure and Function I and Human Structure and Function II courses offered for undergraduate students. She is also an advisor for the graduate master students of Biomedical Sciences and Genetic Counseling. Ms. Amal is a licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Ms. Amal is a Biomedical Scientist with 5+ years of experience at Qatar University. She earned, with honors, her Bachelor (BSc) and Master’s (MSc) degree in Biomedical Sciences from College of Health Sciences/Department of Biomedical Sciences in Qatar University. Her Master’s degree is specialized in Biomedical Laboratory Management, and she has published her project on “Knowledge Level, Motivators and Barriers of Blood Donation among Students at Qatar University”.

Mr. Tameem joined the department of biomedical as a teaching assistant on 2012. He teaches Hematology and hemostasis, immunohematology and blood bank, Immunology and serology, and Diagnostic microbiology. He received his B.S. in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Sanaa University in 2003 and his MSc from the Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan, in 2012. Currently, he is doing a Master in Health professional education from Maastricht University.
His research interest is in hematology and microbiology. He is co-author of many research publications in many journals with an h-index of 3.

Ms. Rasha Abu-El-Ruz is a licensed microbiologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology M(ASCP), licensed medical technologist from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences (CSMLS) and the Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO). Ms. Rasha earned her BSc in medical laboratory sciences from BAU-Jordan, then earned her applied microbiology specialty degree from UofT-Canada. She also earned a post-graduate diploma in human resources management with the focus of occupational health and safety from York university-Canada. Thereafter, she earned her 1st MSc in infectious diseases from LSHTM-London and her 2nd MSc degree from in MPH Epidemiology-QU. Ms. Rasha has diverse expertise in clinical, academic and research settings, in her experience; she worked as a clinical microbiologist in Scarborough general hospital, Canada, as a faculty member in Everest and Anderson colleges, Canada. She also contributed to developing the national certification exam OSMT Canada. In her role at Qatar university, she handled several roles including teaching microbiology courses, learning support and coordination or research at QU-Health. Ms. Rasha has several publications and her research interest is infectious Diseases epidemiology, she is currently a visiting researcher at Weil Cornell Qatar contributing to international project on sexually transmitted diseases with the WHO.

Hissa Al-Thani is a Teaching Assistance at Qatar University, College of Health Sciences, Biomedical Science department who works with the lecturers in implementing the laboratory courses that are required from the students in the biomedical science major, such as Microbiology, Immunology, Histology and Biochemistry labs. Nada Al-Emadi is a teaching assistant at Qatar University who recently graduated with a master's degree in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University. Her research was focused on studying the signaling pathways activated in macrophages by Leishmania exososomes leading to exacerbation of infection. Nada received a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences, MLS from Qatar University in 2019. As an undergraduate student she worked in Dr. Susu Zughaier's lab to investigate the effect of soluble uric acid on autophagy and inflammasome activation in macrophages during bacterial infection.

Mrs. Ofelia Masoud is a Medical Laboratory Technologist at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, and an enrolled second-year master’s student at Qatar University in the biomedical sciences program studying laboratory management track. Alongside, she is an academic advisor for undergraduate students in the biomedical sciences department. Mrs. Ofelia gained a BSc. in Biomedical Sciences from Qatar University in 2015, got her internship in HMC clinical laboratories, and had an extensive internship in the blood bank donor unit at HMC. She is one of the founders of the students association for undergraduate students in the biomedical sciences program in 2013. She is interested in serving the community, organizing and participating in events that promote Qatar University, CHS and the health cluster. Her main research interests are in genetics and molecular biology, health policy, laboratory management and safety. Ofelia has developed a passion for pain management and ergonomic injuries which is her current master’s capstone project.
